Recommendations for health insurance

Hi beauties.

I was wondering what health insurance you’re with. I’m looking for extras cover more than hospital.
Mainly physio since I live an active lifestyle (gymnastics takes a toll on the body!). And I’m also looking for dental and optical. I’ve been on iselect and there’s too many choices… it got confusing!

Thanks.

I have been with several health insurance companies over many years and I am now with AHM which I like for a couple of reasons. First, the cover is from 1 July to 30 June which is a financial year and makes more sense to me than the calendar year which most companies use. Second, with extra cover, you choose how much you spend on each category and I don’t think any other fund offers this. For example, I have to get a crown and I want to use my extra cover in full for that purpose which means I have very little out-of-pocket expenses for the financial year. It is my choice which I think is so important rather than the health fund making the choice for you and giving you limits on how much is payable for each category under extra cover.

Dermatology is only covered by Medicare so you have to pay any extra above the Medicare rebate yourself. Private health funds do not apply to medical specialists such as dermatology, psychiatrists, heart specialists etc.

What state are you in Pink Sugar? I’m in WA & cannot recommend enough our big not-for-profit fund HBF.

I swapped from HCF to HBF last year, after HCF mucked up my (dependent student) son’s cover – they dropped him off when they shouldn’t have & didn’t tell me – then wanted him to wait 12 months for cover for everything, despite him being fully eligible on my policy, if they’d not dropped him wrongly. He needed his wisdom teeth out & there was no way I was going to pay for it after being with them 12 months, it would have cost me thousands – so I swapped. Best decision I’ve made with my health insurance, I’ll not be changing funds

I hope that you are happy with your choice OP.

I have been with HCF this time around for six years (only dropped my insurance because I was unemployed). They’ve paid out more in (hospital) benefit to me than I’ve paid for my premium for hospital and ancillary.

They have excellent limits for ancillary items and are one of the few funds that still do. I highly recommend them.

So after much research I think I’ll go for HCF. I compared their extras cover with others and it seems good value. That is if they don’t change it in! I shall sign up after the Christmas rush – probably 1st week of January.
Their top of the range extras cover (I think it’s called platinum) is $60 a month and if need be I’ll get basic hospital cover although I highly doubt I’ll need it… I hope I didn’t jinx myself!

You really need to shop around.

I’m with Medibank Private and don’t utilise my cover which includes dental and optical as much as I should. The premiums seem to increase all the time too.

I had an appointment with my physiotherapist yesterday and she recommended HCF for physio and also medibank. She mentioned bupa isn’t great for physio.

paulah that’s awesome! More money for makeup! Hehe.

HCF seems like a good option right now. I looked into ahm by medibank and on iselect it says I can claim $13250 worth of benefits per year but it’s $70 per month and of course, waiting period applies.

I probably won’t get hospital cover just yet, I’m sure I can add it later on. I don’t think I’d need it…. not jinxing it!

It is confusing. I’m also with HCF. I have hospital and the lower level of extras which still includes physio, dental and optical. It’s pretty good and quite affordable compared to a couple of other groups I’ve looked at.

I swapped from BUPA to HCF yesterday!! Saved myself over $60 per month and get the same benefits….win, win!! Plus HCF are a not for profit organization with great customer service. Impressed so far but hoping it’s this good when I go to claim on optical next year

I used to work for a major health insurance fund. My one word of advice……read the small print!
You really do get what you pay for. Some of the cheaper funds have ‘benefit limitations’ and strange rules.

I joined Peoplecare over a year ago . I think the covers have changed as the benefits seem to be getting less but costs getting more !
