Hives – help!!

Over the last few weeks off and on I’ve developed bright red lumps which kind of look like infected insect bites. the lump eventually fades and I’m left with bright red itchy patches. They come and go and are usually in different spots each day. I’m taking antihistamine and using a cortisone based cream but it still won’t go away. Has anyone had hives before and what did you do to get rid of it?

My daughter had a horrible burst of hives when she was about five and it was so shocking I took her to the GP who then got her in the same day to see the local immunologist. He was great and identified the cause straight away and so my daughter had instant relief after seeing him.

She’s been hive-free ever since (as we know what caused her hives and we can avoid her exposure to it – in her case it was dustmite poo and cats!). To remedy this we were advised to hot-wash (over 45 degrees) all my daughters clothing and bedding as well as soft toys and soft furnishings. Hanging them out in sunshine was also advised and if it was something like her favourite teddy bear we were told to freeze it in the freezer which also gets rid of dustmites. My daughter loves cats but after our fluffy one died we got a low-allergen one – the Devon Rex breed which is much better for her. We were also advised to use Omo Sensitive and I find that if I try to use any other laundry detergent, it triggers an itchy eczema on her skin straight away (which isn’t hives but is annoying enough!) so I tend to stick to the Omo Sensitive as it was what the doc ordered and it really does seem to work for her.

There are many allergens so I’d get to an immunologist and find out what causes your particular hives. Hoping you get to see one very soon as I know how distressing hives can be.

I too recommend the omo sensitive, I suffer from severe eczema and I also had hives once… find the allergen!
