Wheat packs are great! I use mine in winter to warm up my feet when I go to bed! (no electric blanket). I used to work with a lady that made them, and would also take them to the local markets..she would even make them in fan shapes for your back, or to cover larger areas! So good!

I made a heat pack for my bf recently. I used 100% cotton cloth which I got from Daiso and sewed up rice inside it. It’s a bit more work than the sock idea but it’s reusable and microwaveable. Best thing is that you can customize the pack’s size for what you want.
I followed the instructions on this website here: http://www.instructables.com/id/Making-A-Microwave-Heat-Bag/

Chemists have more variety in sizes. Kmart also sell them but they only have the small rectangle shapes. A hot water bottle is good. I used my grandma’s once and it lasted a lot longer than my heat pack did.

I never knew you were meant to do a sprinkle of water on it to stop it from burning. I always thought the smell came from over heating it.

Wheat packs are meant to be good, I’ve never used one myself. Plenty of people at work use them for neck and shoulder pain as well. Just be careful when you heat them in the microwave. Our office often smells of burnt popcorn but it ‘s just someone whose put their wheat pack in the microwave for too long! Exercise is also good eventhough it’s the last thing you feel like doing when you have menstrual pain.

Libra actually made a heat patch for pains called Libra hotties! They are like a hot water bottle on the go 🙂

I also make my own heat packs similar to IndieAna but I also add some dried lavender and a few drops of lavender essential oil. Then when you heat it up not only is it lovely and hot but also smells wonderfully of soothing lavender 🙂

Ronni I just make my own heat packs. I fill a thick sock with rice, then place that sock in another thick sock, just to make sure it’s securely sealed. Knot the end and I’m done. I heat in the microwave for 2 minutes and it will retain heat for a couple of hours.

Hot water bottles are good too. I’ve never used a wheat pack so don’t know how they compare but with a hot water bottle I can use kettle water. It’s too hot for me initially so I use a towel, once it cools down a bit, I remove the towel. I can get over an hour use before I need to change the water. Never used it for menstrual pain though. I use it on my muscles.

    Hey Ronii,

I personally would invest in a wheat pack. They come in various sizes according to your needs. I have heaps of them. Just make sure you sprinkle a few drops of water on top of it and then microwave according to the instructions. You can buy them at most chemists, at some markets or at health food shops.

Let me know how you go,

    TUD x
