I’m thinking about reducing the amount of dairy & gluten I eat .Is anyone on a gluten & dairy free diet. Have you noticed a difference in your general health and wellbeing.

If any of you aren’t vegetarians, you might want to rethink your stance when you check out what my cousin shared on Facebook. I posted it on the funny photos thread.

I’m a nerd & I came across something recently which made me think I should go gluten free. A book from my library “The migraine miracle : a sugar-free, gluten-free, ancestral diet to reduce inflammation and relieve your headaches for good” by Josh Turknett, MD, (Published in 2013, 219 pages. ISBN: 9781608828753 if anyone’s interested)

Then I saw gluten discussed on ABC’s “Catalyst” science show.

    http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4358631.htm

In a nutshell, if you don’t have coeliac disease, yet a gluten-free diet has improved your health, it’s probably not the gluten per se but either the FODMAPS^ also contained in foods with gluten, or the panification of the gluten (resting period of the dough before it’s cooked). The suggestion is that for hundreds (or thousands) of years, we’ve been making bread by mixing the dough, then letting it to sit for a day or two before cooking. This helps us break down the gluten when we consume it. Modern methods cut this “resting” period to a couple of hours, which is why so many people can’t digest it properly. Following a low FODMAP diet is supposed to be what reduces the bloating & other ill effects often blamed on gluten.

^FODMAPs is an acronym which stands for fermentable oligo-, di- and monosaccharides and polyols.

I’m not a scientist or dietitian, just a nerd. I found the article interesting.

I’ve been a bit lazy on my diet in the last week. To make matters worse I hadn’t kept up with my water kefir routine so I’ve also been out of that. Too much dairy yesterday with no kefir equals diarrhoea! Ugh. All afternoon and then the achy stomach and bloating! It was horrible! So I’ve been on coconut water, ginger beer, water and toast today. Sigh.

Can’t seem to mark the pesky spam on my iPhone unless it’s a topic . Thanks.

I’ve been attending a bunch of cooking classes held by a health coach which have been extremely helpful for me personally. Go with what feels good for you!

Great thread which I’ve just found. Gluten doesn’t bother me, but since I’ve cut back on dairy I feel a lot better and have far fewer stomach issues. My daughter is vegan and it has been quite a journey finding great recipes and ensuring she gets the right combinations of nutrients but it’s definitely do-able.

I am Gluten and Lactose Intolerant and have been on gluten free and lactose free lifestyle change for about 3 years….. I feel so much better!!!! I have more energy and can think a lot clearer….. Also, my stomach doesn’t feel as ‘heavy’ as it used to…. But the thing is if I eat something with either gluten or lactose my body reacts really harshly…… Also, if you have no intolerance or allergy, don’t bother doing it….. I did this with a nutritionist who gave me helpful advice and offered me great alternatives!!!!

I was a non-dairy and non-meat eater before transitioning into veganism these past few months. Probably the best thing I’ve done health wise as you eat more fresh and self-prepared things. Try being off them for a few months (consequently you avoid really sugary and greasy foods like McDonalds) and then try eating junk food, it’s really an eye opener – I can handle a few gummy bears or half a brownie slice before I start to feel sick from all the sugar.
