feeling food going down your esophagus and into your tummy

I was eating fish and chips last night and the chips hurt my esophagus as they went down into my tummy. I’m told that this is quite common, but how does it happen? What causes it?

    It is quite common….. Usually it is because you haven’t chewed your food properly….. Sometimes if you swallow a bit hard hat can happen, too……….
