Protein Shakes

I’m looking at going on a protein shake. I’ve done half a year of endurance weight training and now half a year of strength weight training. I’m looking at helping to build my lean muscle. The portein bars have not excited me. Does anyone know of any good shakes/powders that taste ok?

There are a lot different protein shakes, protein bars etc on iHerb.com. I have been ordering from there. But I recommend consulting with a doctor if you are breastfeeding.

They have up to 10% off (Optimum Nutrition brand), so you may want to check it out. They also have free shipping. You can use my discount code NEL4601 if you like. First time customers can use code NEL4601 and WELCOME5.

Skinjunkie, my 17 yo son bought a massive tub at CW for $40 called Vital Strength 100% Whey and Low Carb. It is in a red and black tub. Check out the ingredients and maybe consult with a doctor. He and his mates did research and thinks this one is good. He joined a local gym so he can get some muscles. Typical boy .

    Bumping this thread up –

Does anyone know which protein powder/protein shake I can safely consume while breastfeeding?

I am not looking for one for dieting purpose. I just wanted one for the purpose of increasing muscle mass after resistance training.

I’ve actually tried quite a few protein shakes when I was really into it last year, and i’m starting to incorporate them back into my diet now. Some great brands i’ve used and had no issues with include Vital Strength Women’s Define (curbs sugar cravings really well), Bioflex Biofurnance for her, and USN Pure Protein IGF -1.

I haven’t had any problems with any of these proteins and the first two mentioned are also fat burners.

Smiling Fili i’d suggest not using that one if the iodine caused those issues for you. The vital strength one I have mentioned does contain iodine but the other two don’t.

    Thanks Imi11!
I’ll write your recommended brands in my journal so I won’t forget it! I’ll check it out when I’m ready to try protein shakes again.
Can anyone also tell me how and when it’s best to take protein shakes? I know it shouldn’t really replace your meals but is it better to drink it lunch time or dinner time? I don’t want to bulk up, I just want to lose a little bit on the waistline. Thanks!

Smiling Filli – when you mean bulk up do do you mean put on muscle mass or put on weight?

Women can never bulk up (put on muscle mass) like men unless they take steroids, it’s not in our genetics! Protein shakes on their own will not make you slim down either, you have to combine it with a healthy diet and exercise regime.

The ones I’ve recommended can actually be used to replace meals. But typically you take them 30mins-1hr after excercise. At the moment I am using the Define one, and I use that as my dinner some nights, i’ll add fresh or frozen fruit and make it a smoothie.

The Bioflex and Vital Strength both come in delicious flavours and they actually have less than 1g of sugar per serve and are less than 100 calories.

Check ingredients when buying protein as many of them have lots of calories because of excess sugar. It’s probably best to stay away from the flavored ones, as the flavor is just sugar.
I recently bought some protein powder that has been very good, has a higher concentration of protein than most and less sugar.

I’ve always wanted to try protein shakes but I had a scare after the last one I tried. I can’t remember the brand anymore but it’s like an energy drink/protein shake.
My period stopped and I got so bloated that I actually thought I was pregnant. I went to a specialist and that’s when I found out I have PCOS and my period stopped because of the Iodine on the drink.
Does anyone know if this safe for me to drink?

So glad about this thread! My trainer’s been on and on at me about going onto protein shakes but I’ve always been too scared to try… i think because I just don’t understand it all and wouldn’t even know where to start with researching about it. This helps, thanks everyone! 😀
