LEVLEN ED

Hey guys, I’m not sure where else to ask this, I will be seeing my doctor in 2 weeks but thought I’d ask here first.

Okay ill start from the start. I was on Levlen ED for about 7 years, no issues at all. I then started to get breakthrough bleeding, had ultrasound, pap smear, tested for STDS and everything came back normal, my doctor changed me onto a higher dose of levlen ed and still had the breakthrough bleeding so doctor changed me onto Zoely, now the breakthrough bleeding stopped and have been on it for about a year now? But for the last couple of months BEWARE TOO MUCH INFORMATION COMING UP but for the last couple of months my “smell” has changed. It’s not a foul smell but its definitely different, I read that this could be a side effect of this pill, its not thrush and I was even told to try some PH level cream to see if that helped and it didn’t so I am now sure it IS the pill.

My question is, I’m actually really wanting to go back on levlen ED, its much cheaper then zoely, low dose and had no issues, do you think levlen ed would work for me now? I mean ive been on different pills for about 2 and a half years now so my body has had a break from levlen, but do you think I will get the spotting again?

Has anyone experienced this? Had spotting on one pill, changed to a few pills and then went back on original pill?

thanks in advance

I’ve never had any issues with Levlen ED, maybe talk to your doctor and voice your concerns, they are there to help 🙂

I had a similar experience with Levlen (I was on it since high school), however instead of going on a stronger dosage, I asked my Dr to give me something weaker – so I went on Yasmin for a while.

I found Yasmin worked for me for a couple of years but then when I started to get spotting again. After that I went back on Levlen for a year which was fine

I was on Levlen for many years so I am not sure if the body just gets used to it after a while or what?

One thing that my Dr said was that you shouldnt take too many breaks in between taking the pill because apparently that messes with your body – you should either take the pill for a consistent time or not take it.

I don’t really like taking pills but I have to because of my imbalanced hormones. I used Levlen before and I didn’t have any major side effects except for a noticeable reduced sex drive. I am now on Zoely and I like it better although I hate the price as well!
What I normally do is I take a break from taking pills from time to time, after 1 or 2 boxes. I stop taking pills to give my body a break from all the chemicals and I just take Vitex. It’s a herbal pill that balances your hormones. Yes, it’s not a contraceptive and you have to take precautions but it gives my body a boost and brings back my sex drive. It also gives me much needed energy that I don’t have everytime I’m using the pill. I just wish there’s a herbal medicine that works as a contraceptive!

    It’s a tricky one isn’t it?
Just recently myself I tried a different pill to my normal one. I had been on Estelle ED (generic of Brenda), and had always found it really good for me.
I think what I worked out was I wanted to blame my pill for my personal situation. I’d been feeling quite stuck career wise, which was making me stressed and depressed, which would chip away at my relationship as well. So I wanted to try a lower dose to cure my “depression” and “mood swings”.
For me, it was strange. Almost straight away on Yaz I could swear I was getting strange muscle aches, and this just heightened my fear of blood clots. Which I’ve always been aware of, even though we’re all told it’s rare.
A lower dose is supposed to be good for many reasons, however I could not justify $75 every 3 months when I was paying just $15.

Spotting is a funny one, I have had a little bit with being on Estelle, but not enough for me to be really worried. However, when I told my doctor this her initial reaction was “are you sure you aren’t pregnant?”…Yeh, look I’m pretty sure I’m not pregnant, my body hasn’t produced any signs of that…”well let’s do a test”…No!

I hate pregnancy tests..but I’m getting side tracked!

As for skipping the sugar pills, I really only do it when I know there’s an important meeting coming up with someone I’m not familiar with, or if I’m going on holiday. That’s it really. After skipping my period does not become hugely heavy, but just a little more than usual. I have actually heard of women skipping the sugar pills and only having one period a year. My initial thought was GOOD LORD THAT WOULD BE THE MOTHER OF ALL PERIODS….But apparently it’s not that bad, and doctors think it’s actually perfectly fine to only bleed once a year. Strange!

As always though, any personal body concerns, particularly with medication that reacts so differently for everyone, I would go back to your doctor for a chat.

Oh my god I had the same issue with levlen!! I went on it at 17, and while I was on it i developed hormonal acne which gradually worsened over the years, and then the last straw was that I started spotting during the middle of my cycle. So my doctor switched pills but those ones didn’t work for me at all. They gave me awful mood swings that I couldnt control at all. And it was super expensive and I just decided it wasn’t worth it so I switched back to levlen and I have found that I only get mid cycle spotting once every few months now rather than every month like before. When I was on it before I used to skip the sugar pills every few months, just because I didn’t want a period. But I only do that if im going on holidays now. My doctor told me skipping sugar pills shouldnt matter but I do wonder if that wasn’t why it all started happening

I wonder about skipping the week off on the pill too….I know a lot of people do it, but I think I’d explode if I did it! I wouldn’t be surprised if that was why you experienced breakthrough bleeding at all melanie-anne. I’m no scientist but the way I figure it, your period has to come out sometime!

    Love your 1950s avatar btw!

I had the same problem a few years back, and I changed to a higher dose. I haven’t had any problems since, It’s been about two or so years. The one I take is about $12 for a four month supply, Norimin. I can’t suggest much else apart from staying on with your current one, especially if it’s not causing any problems. But in saying that I am not a doctor, so I’d definitely suggest discussing it with them as you plan to do.
