Have you ever lied to your doctor?

Hi guys,

I have a cheeky question for you – have you ever lied to your doctor??

You know those questions they ask like ‘do you smoke’ and ‘how many standard drinks do you have a week’, and sometimes you might gloss over the truth a little bit?

I’d love to know what you lied about, why you lied.

Did you think the question your doctor asked wasn’t relevant to your health issue?

Let us know!

Yes, because there was someone else in the room & I didn’t want them to know the truth. HAHA. Oops.

I’ve only lied once. When I was 17 I went to the local clinic with my mum and the GP asked if I was sexually active in front of her. Coming from a very traditional Italian family there was no way I was going to admit that in front of my mum! I promptly made a separate appointment on my own shortly after that so it all worked out in the end 🙂

Nope. Never lied to my doctor…as far as I can remember :p
Why would I? they’re there to help me and keep me healthy. If you’re going to lie, then there’s no point in going to the Doctor’s in the first place!

I’ve been seeing the same GP for seven years now and he would know if I fibbed. In saying that, if I had to see another doctor, it would be difficult to build the same rapport and trust. Would I trust someone new with my body? Interesting predicament, considering any doctor is in a fundamental position of both trust and expertise. Go with your gut (and get a recommendation from someone you trust). Keep in mind you only have this life, so do the best with it. If you lie to your doctor, you are only doing yourself and therefore your one life a complete disservice. I personally like living, despite all its ups and downs.

This! Pretty much sums up why I won’t lie to a doctor.

You’re pretty much lying to yourself if you lie to the doctor. Wouldn’t you rather know so you can make the best possible decisions for yourself? My doctor is forever on my case about my riding a motorbike, managing my stress and eating correctly. The upside? I have a doctor who sends me regular letters regarding those fabulous pap smears we all hate, he taught me how to properly do self breast checks (not my mother the nurse), he helped me through my PTSD, and he’s been bulk billing me this whole time when he’s supposed to be charging me at full rate. Get to know your doctor. They are people who choose this occupation because they care. It’s a hard @#$% job and I am so very grateful. Thanks Dr Khoo. I’m not ready for you to retire yet x

Oh and Jessica712, thank you for not lying to yourself about your health x

I know that I lied to not my regular doctor but to another one I was seeing that day, since mine was away.
We were discussing female things and I was asked if I have pap smears regularly and I said yes when I didn’t. I wasn’t planning on having one soon and I didn’t want a discussion about it, so I said this to stop talking about it.

But I don’t lie to my regular dr, in fact, I talk about a lot of things and it’s therapeutic for me. My doctor asks me some personal questions once in a while and I don’t mind. It depends what sort of relationship you have with your doctor I suppose.

GET YOUR BLOODY PAP SMEAR DONE!!!
_I_ hate it as much as anybody, but it’s the embarrassment that’s the worst. Imagine a team of doctors & nurses operating on you ‘down there’ while you’re under general anaesthetic because you’ve got advanced cancer which wasn’t picked up early because you didn’t get your simple bloody pap smear!

Okay, okay….misfortune8, now that you’ve scared me and everyone else reading this, INTO REALITY, that was a while ago but I will get back on track and make an appointment.
*Thank you* for the concerned reminder♡♡

Yes! They areawkward, but I would rather awkward than a bad alternative. Which reminds me I need to get one done soon.

Funny Pap smear story. I moved right before my Pap smear was due so my first ever visit to my current (young male) GP was for a Pap smear. “Hi! Nice to meet you. Here’s my vagina.” What a way to break the ice, huh! But I lucked out and got a great doc that I have a fantastic rapport with. There’s no shame in getting your check-ups. You gotta do what you gotta do!

    LOL Lucrecia629!
I had the same experience when my usual doc was off on maternity leave. I made my appointment & discovered she was off, saw the replacement instead & said hello & then HELLO AGAIN! That’s one hell of a how do you do!

I’m a doctor and there is nothing worse than when a patient lies. Especially when it results in some serious side effects. We just assume people lie, but it makes your job a lot easier when people tell the truth. We ask the questions because they are relevant to what we will prescribe. Not for listening to the sound of our own voice. And for god sakes people get a pap smear. I hate it more than anyone but you still have to do it! Beats surgery, chemo or death!

    Nope I haven’t lied.
But I watched on the 730 report or somewhere else that when you tell something to your dr they factor in the possibility that you are lying to them. If you tell them you exercise 6 times a week they halve that number in their minds etc. It was interesting to watch bcz I had never thought of that before.

I agree with misfortune8 re pap smear. No-one likes it but it’s one of the things that need getting done.

The doctors you go to make a huge difference. I’ve found that male doctors are so much gentler. Several years ago I went to a female GP for a pap smear, she was so rough and rude that I was traumatised for a long time and didn’t get any pap smears until this year during my postnatal checkup. My male ob-gyn has restored my faith. All the pap smears I’ve had with male doctors were fine

I have to say based on personal experience, many female doctors are rough with zero empathy, no sexism intended. Back to the forum topic, I am now very picky about which doctors to see, and when I decide on them, I trust them and won’t lie to them.

This thread reminds me that I had a reminder letter a week or so back telling me I’m due for mine. Must be a sign that I should be making that sppointment sooner rather than later!
