Nail Issues.

I just wondered how people get such good nails. I have very thin/weak nails but…
I have tried everything: Creams, massage, oils, vitamins and minerals, proteins, garlic, nail hardeners, nail growth treatments, polish, biotin, protect them from water with gloves, I’ve also tried doing nothing and ignoring them too. I’ve tried different brands, cheap ones, expensive ones, home made stuff…. I can’t think of anything I haven’t tried. An all this not just a short time, but each new thing I try I give it a few months at least before I try something new.

I have tried them all, nail care routines, every day, I’ve tried all these things for years and my nails just will not strengthen. They just chip, split and break. Soon as they grow just a little, they break immediately, despite all the care I put into them and all that i have tried to get them to thicken/strengthen. I really don’t know know what else to do.

How do I get stronger nails so that they wont break, so I can for once in my life have them grow long. Does any one else have nails like this and what do you do to try and grow them?

Thank you very much for reading.

Revitanail make a great nail hardener and nail growth product, in fact all their products are great. Maybe you’re using too many products which can cause more harm than good and weaken your nails. I take Swisse Hair Skin and Nail supplement and have also used QSilica tablets which are good for your nails. Crystal nail files are also a good investment but a good quality one not a cheapie.

I also had a problem with the thin nails and what helped most me, was the change of the nail file. What kind of a nail file are you using? I used to have both metal and paper files and my nails were just terrible. Now, I have been using a crystal nail file Aveniro and I can already see the improvement. My nails are much stronger and finally seem to be able to grow a bit. 🙂 If you want to find out more about the differences between various types of files and their effect on the nails, you can check out this article http://www.aveniro.com/21-production-of-crystal-glass-nail-files-aveniro.html. 🙂

I had the same problem but after taking Swisse – Hair skin nails, my nails were much stronger and actually started to grow rather than constantly break off. At the moment i take Hairfinity which is an american hair supplement similar to the Swisse one but i personally think it works better (it’s a bit more expensive though). Either way i think taking a supplement would definitely help your situation and using a topical treatment like the OPI one previously mentioned or my favourite – Sally Hansen Hard As Nails.

    Good luck! 🙂

My best suggestion is to take a supplement like Hair, Skin & Nails. You can get it in a variety of brands at the chemist. I also have weak nails and fine hair. The tablets are loaded with B Vitamins and Biotin and many other things. They should help you 🙂

Thank you so much for everyone’s responses, I really appreciate it. My last blood test showed an extremely low level of Vit D as well and I haven’t been doing enough about it. Could that really contribute to weak nails? I have tried the “do it at home” gel nails with the LED lamp, I expected it to stay on for a while, but it came off the next day, just peeled right off. The other usual polish doesn’t even stay on for one day. No matter which base, or top coats I use.

No I haven’t actually seen OPI. I’ve heard of it, people tend to praise it but I have had no luck finding it in shops. Which store can you find it for sale in?

Genetic, possibly, I guess I didn’t want to believe that lol

Anyway, thank you very much to everyone for replying and for your time.

You can buy OPI Nail Envy online from various places. I highly recommend Adore Beauty. I’ve purchased from them heaps if times. Check it out here….

Be careful with gel manicures. I absolutely adore them, but I find that they are very harsh on my nails.

You can also purchase Nail Envy at selected nail salons, David Jones and Myer! It works exceptionally well, give it a try! The only bad thing about this is the price, it is around $35 at David Jones and Myer, so go with the suggestion Adore Beauty or other online places.
I guess you can take vitamin tablets, according to LiveStrong, ‘Nails are composed of keratin, the same protein found in the hair and skin. Nails require not only this protein, but key vitamins such as the B-complex, C, A, E (alpha tocopherol), D, calcium, zinc, iodine and iron.’

A vitamin D deficiency absolutely could be the cause of the issues with your nails.
You really need to address that, not only for the condition of your finger nails, but so your bones are strong and healthy.

And you can get OPI at David Jones and Myer. but personally I doubt any nail strengthener/hardener/treatment will work if its the vitamin deficiency causing the issues…

My last blood test also showed I’m D deficient and they prescribed something like 5000mg of D to take for a few months. I’m surprised they didn’t do the same for you
