How do you get a lot of volume in your hair?

My mum has short, fine, hair and has been struggling with it being very flat and lifeless for years. I also want a bit more volume in mine as it’s so goddamn long & heavy that the crown ends up looking ridiculously flat.

So, beauties, any tips & tricks for getting a lot of volume and texture in your hair? Any help is appreciated–thank you!

I know it’s naughty, but I still tease my hair. It’s the only thing that gives me volume and gets rid of my awful cow lick.

I’ve got longish fine hair so this is what works for me:
*volumising shampoo & conditioner (I’m just using the cheapi Palmolive 1 at the moment)
    *dry shampoo at crown
    *volumising powder
    *hair cut in layers
*thick barrel curling wand to give a bit of body & movement by making loose waves
*i had some very fine highlights added through the top which gives more dimension and makes it look less flat.
*finally a tip I got off the gorgeous Cara from maskcara.com is to air dry your hair then use a diffuser to finish it off. Works amazing! She also uses a volumising mousse but I skip that and just add a little hairspray because I hate the feel of mousse in my hair.

Make a home made one if you really looking to kick off the beauty out of your hair!!

    Homemade Hair Pomade (Sculpting Wax)
    (All amounts are by weight)
    Ingredients

1 ounce organic beeswax (where to buy beeswax)
1.5 ounces shea butter (where to buy shea butter)
2 ounces jojoba oil – This is a “dry” oil that keeps the formula from being too greasy. (where to buy jojoba oil)
1/8 – 1/4 teaspoon essential oil (i use cedar wood)

Just love it! i do a batch of 6months, 3 drops of vitamin E and your hair looks gorgeous

I have short hair and I blow dry it using my fingers using a upward motion , I then use a texturing balm . Another is scrunch it. I do have curly hair naturally but find if I do that with my Mums hair which is fine and short it gives it a little volume which she really does need.

What texturing balm do you recommend? I think this might help me get a more “structured” look to my hairstyle.

i wash it in the evening and dry to with a towel and sleep, next day it will be all voluminous and you just have to discipline it a bit with some oil or wax, or add more volume by blow drying upside down

I recently tried the O&M Volume Xmas Pack and found that the products gave my hair a really nice natural lift and added volume. Feel free to check out my review on the products here:

I changed my hair dryer from a Braun to Karmin’s Salon Series Ultralight Ionic Hair Dryer. Add a few drops of Pro Naturals Argan Oil to ends and shaft, flip hair and use my new hair dryer. Great results with very little effort.

Dont use any shampoo that claims to moisturize or nourish the hair. Leave that to conditioner.

Often shampoos that are nourishing are to heavy for the root and you end up with what we call heavy roots. (yes the irony I know)
Use a light shampoo, I filter light and heavy shampoos by looking at the consistency of the product. If it’s creamy and not opaque it’s heavy. The “see through” shampoos are good for volume irrespective of brand.

Upside down drying is an excellent idea. Even put abit of hairspray in it first and the dry with the hair dryer. I like big volume so that’s what I usually do.

try not to put to much other product anywhere near the root, this will only quicken oil production which also results in limp hair.

    Good luck!

When I want to add volume to my hair, I like to use a volumising mousse to my damp hair and then I blow dry it, while scrunching it up. To add texture, I recommend using a texturising spray or a sea salt spray on dry hair. To add volume to dry hair, my favourite volumising powder is the Batiste XXL Volumising powder.

I agree with Seashells that some long layers will add lots more volume, movement and texture to your hair. I have also heard that using hot rollers can help to add volume to the hair.

If you want to check out Chloe Morello or Sharon Farrel on Youtube, both of them have videos about styling the hair to get more volume, which I personally find very helpful.

Hey Ana, about the volumising mousse – can you work that into your hair and leave it to air dry? Will the lack of heat make the hair feel crunchy? I usually air dry my hair and just add anti-frizz at the ends and dry shampoo at the roots but have been wondering if I can add mousse to my routine as well.

I wouldn’t recommend applying mousse if you air dry your hair because, as you said, this can make it crunchy. I think there are some new mousses in the market that can be used without blow drying but I don’t know if they work as well.
