Highlights or all over colour?

Ladies, please help me decide!

I’ve always said I was going to hold off colouring my hair until it started to go grey. But given my crazy hectic lifestyle with my children chipping away at my sanity daily, I really don’t think I have the emotional capacity to cope with spotting that first grey hair so I’ve decided I need to get out in front of it.

I’m booked in for highlights next week, but I’m wondering if maybe I’m better off getting an all over colour? I think the benefit to highlights is that they’re a bit more forgiving when regrowth starts coming in. But on the other hand, having to maintain an all over colour would be good incentive to get myself in for trims more regularly, because I often neglect that and don’t do it nearly enough.

For experienced hair colour users, what pros and cons have you noticed and which would you recommend – highlights or all over colour?

I personally prefer highlights as it is less upkeep and gives contrast to your natural colour. Even if you do have a few greys the highlighlights can help blend them in.

If you don’t have any greys yet, then I’d recommend highlights. The upkeep is a lot easier & given that you’re stretched with your kids, trying to maintain an all-over colour right now isn’t feasible. Wait until you have some greys before doing the all over colour. I’m about one-third to half grey now & when my colour grows out I end up looking tri-coloured, with my natural ash brown + the grey + my un-natural chocolate brown all mixing together in my mane.

I’ve had foils for a long time. I personally prefer them to an all over colour as you can have different shades of colour in them, I have different shades of blonde in mine . I find the regrowth is less obvious with foils too.

Do you find the foils damage your hair, Hayley? I was reading about different highlighting techniques and I`m leaning toward balayage because there`s no foil involved. My hair hasn`t recovered from my last pregnancy and it`s quite fine, so I`m hoping to minimise damage as much as possible. I`ve also read about Olaplex so I need to find out more about that.

I`ve moved my appointment time forward a bit because there`s a lot to discuss with my hairdresser!

I don`t find that the foils damage my hair. I`ve had them for years and I think my hair is in pretty good condition considering it`s been coloured for such a long time. I`m sure your hairdresser will help you make the decision which is right for you.

I had a good chat with my hairdresser about the use of foil and she said that even with a balayage, they still like to use the foils because otherwise they have to apply heat, which can be even more damaging. Plus I would imagine heated hair dye would kick out some nasty chemical vapours, which is best avoided as much as possible.

So the foils use the hair`s own heat to develop the colour. That all made sense to me so I was happy to trust her professional opinion and I`m glad I did. She did a great job. I love my highlights and my hair doesn`t really feel any different than it did before. This is why we trust ourselves to the professionals, right? 😉

I definitely think it depends on what look you’re after and whether or not you have the time to maintain. Perhaps talk to your stylist about it before you go in for your appointment!

I used to be a big lover of all over cover, but then fell in love with baylayge/ombre. After a an impromptu change to all over blonde it’s taken me years to get back to my natural colour in a way that I can maintain. I now keep my natural colour but get highlights and lowlights put in whenever I need a change. No worry about root touch-ups, and not as big of a deal if I have to post-pone my appointment a few weeks!

Highlights do have a lot of advantages, don`t they? Low(er) maintenance, you still get to remember what your own hair colour looks like and it seems like it would help give the illusion of texture and more fullness to fine hair (like I have).

I`m strongly leaning toward the highlights. But I still wonder what it would be like to make a more dramatic change. It`s harder to go back once you decide on a full colour change though.
