Help! Hair dye for sensitive scalps?

Hey gals, I’m really at my wits end….. And hoping some of you may be able to help me.
I’ve got a really sensitive scalp so when I dye my hair I get an awful rash on my scalp from the dye. I’ve tried supermarket brands, others from the health food shop, dye for men which you just leave on for 5 minutes and even getting it done professionally….. I’m fine while the solution is on, it’s usually an hour or so afterwards that I start scratching like crazy and then it takes a few weeks to recover….
Has anyone got any ideas on what else I could try please? I’m at a loss what to do next, and I don’t want to not dye it as I have way too many greys!
Hopefully someone can help, thanks in advance….

Hi Fi! Did you ever find relief? I have the same trouble.
I went to a new hairdresser a few weeks ago and forgot to tell her the trick I discovered. I’m just getting over the maddening scalp sensitivity! Horrible!
You can google this for more info.
Have your stylist put 2-3 packets of Sweet n Low (yup, the pink stuff) in the hair color. You might have a little bit of irritation but NOTHING like what it normally would be!
I have an appt for color tomorrow and just thought I’d look to see if there were any new suggestions when I ran across your post. I will NOT forget to take some S & L …def don’t want to go thru another month of misery.
    Hugs- a friend

I reckon the Olia one by Garnier is awesome. Other dyes make my scalp tingle but not this one. It is ammonia free and I didn’t think it would work that well for me as I go blonde – but it’s actually awesome. I really love it.

FiFi73, you’ve probably tried everything I’m about to suggest … Can you get foils without your hairdresser getting the dye on your scalp? (This was something my hairdresser suggested for me).

Have you tried a scalp treatment after getting your hair coloured? Tints of Nature have one that’s meant to soothe irritation. Here’s the link: http://www.tintsofnature.com.au/hair-care-organic.html

Hi Petal, thanks for the suggestions! I’ve not tried having just foils, so that might be something I’ll try next time.
I just had my hair dyed on Tuesday and she added Argan Oil into the dye mix to see if that would help keep it off my scalp, but it still has given me a reaction…. 🙁
I already use MooGoo shampoo and Conditioner but can’t use their scalp creams ironically!
I’ll have to have a look into the essential oils, I hadn’t even thought of that.
Thanks again, fingers crossed that I can find a solution or “Grey Hair” is going to be the trend for me from now on… 🙁
Also, MooGoo have scalp treatment creams.

This may create more irritation due to your sensitivity, but have you tried using essential oils? e.g. neem, lavender, tea tree, rosemary, cedarwood. I have had an intensely itchy scalp for years, so I’ve been experimenting with all sorts of products for this. So far the best relief I’ve had is from applying eucalyptus oil onto my scalp. Since your scalp is so sensitive, you’d probably be best to do a patch test first!
