Dying hair blonde…

Hello!

I usually go to the salon and get blonde highlights but I would really love to find a way to do my hair at home and save some money on salon visits.

I have natural dark blonde hair (the ends are lighter – or at least they used to be)

I would like any suggestions for an at home highlighting kit or all over dye that looks natural – I do not want entirely bleach blonde hair, I’ve had that before and it ruined my hair plus it was too much up keep/too bright. I do want it to look lovely and light though. My skin tone is cool – very pale with pink undertones.

Any help is appreciated, and photos for examples would be great especially if it’s something you use yourself.

Thank-you

Hey gorgeous beauties! You all have the most amazing, beautiful souls and I could just cuddle you all! Trish, I really appreciate what you said and it absolutely wasn’t a sermon. I was gobsmacked I was shot down for sharing. Needless to say, the girls’ night out was indeed a big night out. It was all for a good cause, and I managed to see quite a few women I had not seen in a very long time. I’m still feeling the after-effects.

Short-term hair plan: I already have an oil treatment in which I will leave in overnight. I will possibly give the ends a bit of a trim with my new hairdressing scissors perhaps tomorrow (depending on how awesome I feel in the morning), and then decide whether I will attempt to lighten the lower half of my hair or perhaps try a semi-permanent for kicks.

Super Steph, you crack me up about the music and the dog in the bathroom… I do that too sometimes! My dog will jump up and start licking the water! And as for Mistress M8, you really should have been where I was last night; two rather interesting specimens that may have put your plumber to shame, and they were both complete “ballers” as they called themselves! Lol

So I’ve got the colour in my hair right now. I have some back up 30 vol developer in the cupboard, some hi-lift highlighter as well, and if all else fails, I also bought some of that crema colour in the ash (I figured why not). I also grabbed some toner conditioner (I already had the shampoo).

I’m also down one wine, and I’m about to go for the second before I rinse this stuff out and see how it is before I have to tone it. Since my hair is so painful, I had to put on some heat (towel on, my hair is too long for self-foiling and I’m sweating my proverbials off in this Brisbane humidity).

    Feathers crossed!

I always lighten my hair at home and even on the occasions i rinse the bleach out too quickly and it is slightly yellow toned, i just put a toning shampoo or a toning treatment on and leave it for a while and my hair comes out looking fine, i think with light or dark shades of blonde when lightening even if it doesn’t look perfect at first, once toned all the shades blend together and it just looks natural. If you had darker hair i wouldn’t recommend lightening for the first time at home.

I have dirty blonde hair and sometimes let it grow naturally and just lighten the tips for a balayage look or just touch up my roots. I use bleach ( i buy the hi-lift powder and innovative creme developer from priceline ) and either paint it on the roots or ends, or separate my hair and do foils. Always keep a timer on if you choose to use bleach as it can definitely damage your hair if left on too long. I then use a toner – i prefer purple ones ( i use lee stafford bleach blondes shampoo ) or a blue based toner (swarkzkopf is pretty good).

Another method i use is the crema colour tubes (also from priceline, the boxes with the hair colour samples in store) mixed with the creme developer. There are plenty of youtube hair tutorials just using different brands mixed with the developer, this is probably the least damaging yet simplest way to dye hair and it gives the best results if you are after one particular colour. They have a really nice light ash blonde colour that lightens but is an ash shade so you don’t need to use a toner on top.

Just make sure you have a really good treatment to use afterwards in case your hair does get damaged, and have enough product in case you need to retouch your hair.

I’d throw in some toning conditioner (purple) as a hair mask & leave it on for a while. If that’s not enough, I’d change to a dark or old pillowcase & sleep in a plait with the conditioner still in your hair. Shampoo out in the morning.

So I found my old hairdresser and got her to tidy up the regrowth on my hair (where I had three to four months of regrowth there; it was so bad). The hubby cracked it over the cost (still, even though it was cheaper than where I had been going). So, today I tried a box of dye. I am deeply regretting it.

I tried the L’Oréal Wild Ombres Preference. I really loved the brush however I have a mix of blonde, brassy and orangey tones. I left my hair for 40 minutes, didn’t use all the product (and I have very long hair), used a specialised shampoo to combat any potential brassiness and I have to say, my hair looks crappy.

Any hot tips would be gratefully received!

There’s plenty of at home products that will help you achieve blonder hair. Have you heard of going bronde? There’s a few products available I can’t remember the latest brands, but I think JLO is the face of one. Or try ombre you can get kits for that too!

Your hair looks great, very natural. Do let me know how it goes on your next attempt. How did you do the highlights as it looks like an all over color or is it just on top?

Also I’m not sure if color stripper will work on my hair as it is only bleached and has quite a few centimeters of regrowth, I thought colour stripper was only for dyed hair?
