Cleaning a Straightener

My ghd (the limited edition Peacock one) has become a bit scratchy lately and can sometimes feel like there’s sand on the hot plates. It is also getting caught in my hair a bit as well. I’m assuming I need to clean it. Do any of you beauties have any tips on cleaning a straightener? I would love to hear from you, as I’m totally at a loss as to how to clean it. I don’t want to use just any product to clean it because whatever I use to clean it will ultimately get in my hair next time I go to use the straightener.

Thanks!

I never thought of cleaning my hair straightener but it certainly makes sense to do so. Will try water and wipe.

Mezzbeth Presume GHD sent instructions but you lost them?? Just curious because Karmin Tools advised that all instructions be kept safely.

i just grab a tissue and scratch off any of the build up and if that didnt work enough i just grab a tissue and soak a bit of water on it and scrub it off 🙂 doing all this while it is completely turned off and cool of course 🙂 x

    hope that helped x

Posts by Steph Speth and Zaralis are very good and I hope
The instructions that came with my G3 Salon Pro styling iron are very simple, and will also help –
“Switch off and UNPLUG styling iron
    Let styling iron cool
Use a soft CLEAN cloth and gently rub all residue off.
It is recommended to do this after every use to avoid residue from building up on the plates of your styling iron.”
I don’t use any cleaning product, just a microfibre cloth which I wash after each clean.

Product build up can cause this but so can age (of the straightener of course! hahah)

It’s obviously cheaper to try to clean the plates rather than buy a new one so it’s a good idea to try that first 😉

What I do is grab my straightener when it’s completely cold and not plugged in, spray it with spray and wipe (some people like windex or natural cleaners, I stick with spray and wipe because I’ve had no issues and it cleans well). Spray generously on a dry cloth and wipe over each plate, if the cloth comes away dirty or you can see spots of build up on the strightener, repeat until everything is spotless.

Grab a fresh cloth, wet it and wring out the excess water, use the damp cloth to wipe over the plates to remove residue of the cleaner. Dry with a clean, dry cloth.

I use microfiber cloths too, they are so gentle but pick up a lot of grime and dirt.

I would be looking really closely to make sure it’s not a break down in the coating. I wouldn’t expect it to be the case on a GHD but I’ve seen on other straighteners the ceramic coating ball up and appear as grit.

I personally wouldn’t be willing to try anything more than water and maybe at a stretch mineral oil which could help if it’s product build up. There are other suggestions online but I personally would be scared of risking my baby!
