At what age should you cut your hair short permanently?
Around 50+ years ago, there was an unwritten rule that women should cut their hair short once they reach 40 years old. I’ve also heard a variant on this being once a woman has children.
Thank goodness this belief is defunct. Or is it?
Is there an age of a woman or man when they should give up long hair?

I`ve never heard that Nursing Homes request this either Trish – I know when we visited mum years ago, there were ladies in there with long hair.
My ex mother in law has hair way past her shoulder and she is in a nursing home now and I am sure she would never have her hair cut.

Actually this is true. I was told that Nursing Homes encourage their clients to keep their hair short for this very reason.

It seems the general consensus is sensible. However you want your hair is how you should style it.

@Angie onlycut it if you want to, not because you feel you should.
I just turned 50 and my hair was midway down my back and I got a couple of inches off only because it was in crap condition. I am going to get it back to the length it was before probably.
I love both long and short hair and maycut it short in the future, however it will be to make me happy, no one else xx

Nooooo. It looks fab. If you are looking for a change, perhaps some highlights around your face

Here are the things to consider Angie: Are you ready to…
♠style it daily (she did not wake up like that. Need to curl it, do waves, ad volume, use products to hold this curl, to heat protect, to condition, hydrate…consider extra cost)
♠do highlights regularly to maintain that dimensional look (consider pricing too if you are not ready for DIY)
♠trim at hairdressers often (monthly to once per 2 months or so) to maintain length and shape (consider costs)
♠some hair styles will be hard to do (fancy braids, top knots…)Why you want the change? Social media motivated you or…etc.
I personally have long hair (to my waist) and straight and fine textured (plenty of it). I had my hair cut into bobs, lobs or whatever when growing up and later when teen. It was hard to keep it styled, so I did not bother. My hair looked messy all the time. Not until I grew it long that I said: hallelujah! And do not care about cutting that short again. Plus maintenance is super cheap too hahahah (I trim my own hair and do highlights once per 1/2 year or quarter)
If your hair grows fast and you are sick of having long hair, try it! Hair will grow back, at least you will know if you liked it and want to keep it…then just keep wondering how it would be like.
PS: Love your long hair =D

Perfectly said, Yohanna. I do hope you really want to do something different, Angie, as opposed to feeling you should because of age pressures? Your hair looks great – balage, I have no idea how you spell that or highlights of some sort if you want something different?

I don’t believe in the “short hair after a certain age” rule. I’ve had both shorter (well, bob-length short) and long hair & have come to the conclusion that I look better with long hair. I tried the guide posted by shanny_ on the previous page & yep, it supports my conclusion too. No chance of me going shorter than a lob ever again!

I only recolour my roots, so I eke out a single box of colourant to last for two regrowth applications. I`ve been doing this for donkey`s years. I think my long hair takes less time to style (longer for washing obviously). I often throw my hair in a plait or bun when it`s wet & I`m out the door – done!
