Best at home whitening kit if you have a cap on your tooth

I have a cap on my front tooth (I chipped half of it off when I was little) and I have always been a little uneasy about trying DIY whitening kits in case it is too harsh on my tooth.
Does any one have any past experiences (good or bad) or know what I should stay away from?

Thanks in advance

    Hey,

As most people have mentioned the ‘cap’ won’t whiten.

One thing you can do is whiten your teeth to the colour you want, and then visit your dentist to have your cap remade with a new colour or shade to match your cap.

I have porcelain veneers and had my bottom teeth whitened and then had my veneers made to match.

Home whiting shouldn’t damage the cap it’s just that your other teeth won’t match it. You can get some great home bleaching kits these days which are way better than what they used to be and some come with an LED light, these are what I use now for up keep and I find them really effective

The best way will be, when you ask about it your dentist. Not in all cases may do whitening treatment.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one with a white crown and discoloured teeth! You all make me feel not quite so much of an ugly duckling (not that any of you are ugly ducklings but I hate my smile cos I reckon I’m an ugly duckling.)
I broke my right front tooth when I was 18 and had a crown done. That was 40 years ago and my crown is still white but my natural teeth all around it have gradually discoloured, worn down and bent too. (What the?!)

This year is my total makeover year (I’m blogging it all if anyone’s interested) and I’m having veneers put on my teeth in June, plastic surgery on my eyes in November and Botox in March. I’ve lost 13kg in the last four months (4kg to go before I hit my target) and I’m relearning how to do my makeup and skincare to make the best of what I have. I’m going all out this year to roll back my raging face.

My teeth have been a major self confidence killer for me for several years now and I never smile with my mouth open anymore because I’m so ashamed of them. But all that stops this year when I finally get them fixed. I suspect its going to cost me close to $8000 dam it but it will be worth it to smile without embarrassment finally. 🙂

Thanks everyone for the responses so far, maybe I will just wait to whiten all of my teeth at the dentist. I definitely don’t want to risk discolouring the cap!

No jatz although I was playing with siblings.

I rolled the two dice, they fell off the kitchen table and onto the floor. I was laughing and picked up one and as I bent to pick the other, I smacked my mouth on the edge of the table. Lucky (or unlucky?) my mouth was open laughing, or I’d have split my lip too – but maybe I wouldn’t have broken my tooth!

I think I was actually being silly – it certainly cost my parents (then me) a lot of money in dental bills. The first fix up job was pretty bodgy and looked awful (was a piece of gold held on with two hinges and coated white – and it easily knocked out a year later when I was wrestling with my brother!) and I had that until I was 18.
I hated it and was so self conscious and you will never find me smiling in any photos (not showing my teeth) from the age of 10 to 18.

One of my front teeth is a crown (hockey accident). When it was first done it matched my teeth perfectly, but over time my teeth became a little less white. My dentist was happy to whiten them to match my crown, but I wouldn’t DIY because it is tricky to get the shade right.

I have two crowns on either side of my top teeth. My front teeth used to be always sort of white but now that I have crowns around them, my front teeth now look horrible. I asked my dentist if I was allowed to whiten them or something and he said no. He told me I couldn’t even use any of these whitening products around as they can’t go on the crowns either.

He did suggest that I could go to him and pay so much and he would do just my two front teeth but then he said they would look out of place and too white next to the crowns. Gave up on that idea.

Am seriously thinking perhaps down the track to just get crowns on my front teeth and then hopefully they will the same colour as the other crowns. In pictures, I can’t stand to smile anymore as I am so embarrassed by the different colours.

Wondering how you broke yours playing Monopoly Kassalee. Sibling?

Hi Luna19, I’ve always wondered this too and would be interested in the response.

I too have a cap on my front tooth, also breaking off half (just hit the nerve) when I was 10 years old. Had a temp tooth until teeth fully grown and then a crown and then I had it replaced with a much better one 20 years ago. I can see how discoloured my teeth have become in 20 years (not too bad, actually) and other than using whitening toothpaste, I’ve always been wary of trying anything else.

You didn’t happen to break yours while also playing monopoly?!!!
