The above article compared in a nutshell differences between Gold and Bare (or more intensity settings vs less, flashes, longevity…etc). This comparison can help anyone to understand what to look for when buying IPL device in general.

And this article explains what intensity levels mean in detail and detailed info about SmoothSkin Bare in general. Excellent info there

“Smoothskin Bare has low energy intensity flashes of 3J/cm2. This means application is fast because it takes less time to recharge between flashes. The low intensity is also gentle so it’s safe for medium to darker skin tones as well as light. But does this lower intensity affect your hair reduction results?

Let’s consider the guidance given with other IPL devices. Most have 3 or 5 intensity levels ranging up to around 8J/cm2. Using the highest level that’s safe for your skin tone gives the best results.

That’s not to say the lower levels don’t work. They do. But they can take longer to achieve your optimum hair reduction results versus using a higher, but still safe, intensity level.”

Smoothskin Bare IPL review; Ultra-fast & superb for dark skin

This is why they also made Smooth Skin Gold that comes with higher setting levels , so people who want faster results and have paler skin (therefore safer for them than darker tones) can get that version. Yup, more complicated machine, more $$ you need to fork out.

This info may help for those deciding to get an IPL machine but are confused why they differ so much in prices and they are supposed to do same thing.

Found an excellent article explaining the IPL and how devices can differ (therefore in prices, I guess)

Smooth Skin Bare that I use is very safe as it uses lowest energy setting of one low intensity – 3 J/cm2 (that it allows it also to pulse recharging so darn fast…fastest so far on the market), but this means also longer time to see results. Also it needs to be used once per 7 days in first 12 weeks as setting is low.

Pricier devices come with button that allows you to change intensity levels and they can go higher for those people who can tolerate. So you can pick. And they are to be use less frequently (as they are stronger! and you do not want to damage your skin)

IPL intensity varies between 3 and 50 J/cm2. SO when exploring your devices look for: intensity, settings, suitability, look for corded ones, and if possible unlimited number of flashes…or lots of them hehe…then compare prices

Mini update: I’ve been slacking off of late and have now missed two consecutive ipl sessions. Life just took over…
I didn’t shave certain areas in the two weeks such as my arms and it seems the hair growth has slowed down and there is slight textural changes. No difference in my underarm or bikini areas though.

jlsta indeed it was a wonderful event. All BH events are amazing and the staff are gracious hosts. 🙂

Gilded, I also skipped , but only one, as I was away unable to use it.

What I noticed is that the limbs and all, are having much less hair, growing slowly…etc. But underarms and especially bikini…least change! Underarms soso, but bikini now it seems like nothing much has changed last couple of weeks! Will see how it goes….So in conclusion, the darkest hair, black bikini area, is hardest to budge! The light brown, way easier…

Wow this sounded like a great event!

Guys, I will have to skip one treatment. Will be away and sharing room for 2 weeks (until 24th). I am ok with being naked only with my sunnies on and IPL zapper, but I do not think my roomie will be happy seeing this (especially zapping my back side LOL). So will post next update with some delay. So far, super happy with the results!

    That’s really good progress gilded.

Close up pic of my hand near the wrist. This is after 6-7 IPL treatments and the hair not being shaved for a week in between IPL treatments.

    • 7 yrs, 2 mths ago

      Yaaaaaaaaaaay! It is happening! lol

On my forearms hair can not be seen any more. I got couple of hair left, but they are fair, hard to see. I took pics, nothing to be seen but bare arms. This is the only area on the body that got full 7 treatments, as the rest of the body was epilated before I started IPL-ing (so got probably 3 proper treatments only so far, since I gave up epilating and turned to shaving takes about 3 weeks for the hair to grow back almost properly. Still I did start immediately on those epilated areas, just in case, same time as with arms)
