What do you value in a product review?

So I’m having a hard time with reviews, more specifically I’m wondering whether the amount of effort I put into writing a review is actually worth it.

I take into consideration what the product specifications are, what they claim / promise for the product and user, what my reaction is via first impression and then what the reaction is post-use.

I’ve received a bit of criticism regarding the length of a couple of reviews; other than this I’m not learning anything new. I’ve also taken the time to compare the criticisms I have received in comparison to what is published on the site, i.e. via http://www.beautyheaven.com.au/rating-and-reviewing-products-in-beautyheaven-1836#comment-2263741

Other than this (non-published) criteria, I seem to fulfil other listed requirements, as I have been invited to participate in trials (which I of course enjoy very much).

So what do fellow beauties look for?

TUD, I just had a quick read of your review of the NI moisturiser ( I tried the wrinkle corrector and shampoo) which was very nicely detailed . So co-incidental I just had some of my daughters friend stayed overnight and one of them used half of the Ultraderm toner which is only a small bottle and thank goodness I used some and reviewed it first ! You said you received comments about the length , probably I wouldn’t bother copying the ingredients /use because the buyer can get that from the shelves or online , but otherwise , its greatly detailed and funny for this one.

    Bump!

I wanted to bump this thread in the hope some of the features and ideas we’ve discussed might possibly be raised in the New Year for BH.

    Fingers crossed!

I’ve suggested this before but what I would find helpful is:

    • being able to “follow” a member who is our skin/hair twin (looking at you Petal lol) and being able to click their profile to be able to read all their reviews

    • having a brief summary of user on the side of their review under their name (like pretty much all review sites have) with age bracket like 18-25, 25-35 etc then skin type, hair type

I like when people give a brief info into their skin hair whatever when reviewing a product. It really helps.
For example if someone has dry skin and used a product for oily skin and said it was bad for them , giving it a lower rating , I’ll take it less serious than an oily girl using it.
I like how we use to be able to see brief info on reviewer.

I agree! I love how super in depth m8 goes onto her reviews.

ray_jay, thank you for reactivating this great thread! I also would like to thank misfortune8 and TheLovelyDuckling for the quality of their reviews.

I would like to add duality as someone’s reviews that have been very helpful to me. I have bought, and not bought, products based on duality’s reviews. We seem to have a similar shade requirement for liquid foundation (pale skin with a slight leaning towards warm undertone).

There are other members that I often thank when I read their quality reviews, and many of them are active forum members.

I didn’t know where to post this but I just wanted to say a huge shout out to tud and misfortune 8 for your excellent reviews. I’ve read a couple recently on the hunt for a new things and their always thorough, to the point, and give a good detail of information.
Thanks ladies. Saved me recently from some purchases. Oh and thanks for going on about the tresemme deep cleanse shampoo misfortune , it’s been the best find for me since I brought in Dec last year. Legendary ladies.

To every one else keep up the great reviews, love reading them all.

When I read a review I actually want to hear about how the person experienced the product – what worked with the product and what didn’t. I look at any “tips” they have for using the product. I don’t really look at the section that says “suitable for …”. I don’t really think we can guess who a product would be suitable for.

When looking at product reviews I would say the one thing that I look for is how well they have explained how the product worked on them and how it might differ to how well it worked on other people. Obviously we all have different skin and hair types but if they have clearly explained what kind of skin or have they have and well it worked for them then I can clearly see if it will work for me.

Thanks misf. Yes still in pending. Im not too worried. I can always email too. Just find it interesting. I was a bit harsh on this product and its relatively new to market. Just found the product deceiving – said avocado lotion and yet its the last ingredient on list. lol

Maybe its my fault brands leave bh. Ha ha. Too negative Ha ha
