University weight gain

This year I started my first year at university (I succeeded with excellent marks) but due to previously being in school/working only 8 hours a week the temptations of the real world got to me. I started a new job which I work 20 hours a week and was doing full time uni, so I was a little strained for time. I just fell into the temptations of what I would call “poor time management eating” and “that looks good, who cares”. With this I managed to gain 7kg this year which has made me very self conscious and uncomfortable. I have started an exercise and food plan which I am currently on – so I will update on that progress. This topic is to talk about your tips and tricks in staying organised and not eating out/crap food all the time like I was and just maintaining a good diet and exercise while in university/working or full time employment, mums. Anyone with a busy schedule. If you could let me know your tips it would be very appreciated.

I really appreciate all of the suggestions.
I am currently on day 12 of counting my calories and working out. I sometimes lack the motivation to get up and work out, but other than that I am doing well. 🙂

I think it comes down to preparation. Preparing what you’re going to eat for the week, whether that’s for lunch or dinner or both. There is a saying ‘fail to prepare, prepare to fail’. I too have put on weight this year, and by monitoring what i’m eating and preparing my food for the week I have lost about 4kgs in 3mths.

When I was at uni i would always ensure I had a sandwich packed in order to not be tempted by the bad foods on offer. Even now working fulltime I use the weekend to plan what i’ll have for lunch or dinner for the week. Right now i’m having my cruskits and tuna which I had prepared. They are quick and easy to pick up, pack and take to work. I have a nectarine for later when i’m hungry again!

Preparation definitely, I used to take cruskits and tuna too.
Often an apple too, as it does help with sugar cravings.
Also make sure you take a bottle of water with you, as thirst can be mistaken for hunger too.
During times when I wasn’t prepared id find myself wanting a choc bar or packet of chips, especially when you had tight class schedules.

Imi11 I really appreciate the advice. I definitely need to organise lunches during the week otherwise I definitely don’t do it in the morning – I like to get as much sleep as possible before getting in the car and going to uni. I am on my 6th day of eating right and exercising, so that is definitely exciting for me.

Shoppermania Thank you for your congratulations. I definitely spend a lot of money on crap food, I really appreciate all the tips and definitely will be implementing many of them! I did let myself go a few times health wise this year, because I had a lot going on – I definitely think taking care of myself is important.

Trish Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! I hope everything is well for you!

Try not to have cash or change on you. Unfortunately nowadays food retailers accept “pay pass/tap and go”.

I was quite the opposite during university, I spent so much time running around between lecs/tutes/library and then trying to catch the fastest train home, I almost always forgot to eat. But then again I didn’t have many friends at uni so I didn’t spend a lot of time at the refectory or uni bar lol.

Firstly, congrats on your marks! At uni, I find it’s best to pack my own food to avoid buying all the unhealthy stuff there (also, saves you a LOT of money). Of course, this does take time to prepare, but try to find simple things to make that you enjoy. Try to incorporate walking into your routine as much as you can, especially around the huge campus. Swap a short bus ride for walking (especially on your way back from uni/work, if you’re in a rush in the morning).
And I think, above all, take care of yourself! Between work and uni, it’s easy to make you and your health become not a top priority. But it’s really important to take the time to relax and look after yourself, which includes treating your body right!

Definitely Shoppermania’s last point! Self-care is really important, especially in stressful times such as uni. Make sure that you regularly just chill out and relax, and you’ll find that taking the time to look after yourself will translate into being able to eat and exercise better
