Online Business Admin Courses

I’m currently working in retail but I really want to get back into admin.

I worked up until 4 years ago in a reception/admin role, and I was in that job for 10 years. I have limited experience in Excel and Powerpoint and my other skills are pretty rusty.

What I’m really wanting to know is has anyone done an online course, whether it be Cert 3, Cert 4 or Diploma, how they found it, was it easy, hard, who the course was through, any info at all that may be helpful to me.

I really want to do it but I’m finding it really difficult deciding on an organisation to go through, the pricing varies so much, and also whether I do a Cert 3, Cert 4 or Diploma in Business Admin.

I would just love any advice/info at all.

Thanks ladies

I’ve been looking for online courses to complete as well, but in photography. I’ve found Open Colleges, which looks pretty good and will work around my schedule. Just be VERY CAREFUL (as Choonygal said) when finding a course – make sure they are completely official and reliable. One of my friends was caught in that web himself, and it was a pain in the ass to say the least. I’d recommend Open Colleges/TAFE, but of course the extensive research before hand is a must. Good luck! xx

Thanks Jesse. All the ones I’ve looked at are RTOs with accredited training. But I know there’d still be some that are better than others. Do you know who your friend was going through?

All I can say is, when choosing a training organization (online or otherwise), be VERY careful. If possible, go with a government or university provider (TAFE, Macquarie, etc). I did an advanced diploma course with a private training organisation. It took a year of hard work 5 days a week to receive that certificate. Then, 4 years later, when I needed to include that certificate in my CV and contacted the organisation to receive a copy, they sent me a Cert 3. I rang to tell them they made a mistake, they said they’re incredibly sorry, but it turns out that, at the time I graduated my “advanced diploma” their accreditation had lapsed, and they were only entitled to administer cert 3s..! (Which I could have done at TAFE going 1 night a week for 6 months..!) Turns out, that trainer had a reputation in the industry of being a Mickey Mouse organisation, anyway. All my hard work was for nothing, and I ended up re-doing my qualification at TAFE. So if u can’t go to TAFE (which I recommend) check with people in the industry, online reports, EVERYWHERE except the training organisation’s own material to find out how the organisation and it’s graduated are thought of in the relevant industry. Good luck!

Can you tell me Choonygal who it was? Just so I can avoid them!

I’m looking at Open College, Open Training, AVLI/AOT, Australis College & Axiom.

I feel I’m probably further advanced than a Cert III, so I’m trying to decide between Cert IV and Diploma. I don’t want to bite off more than I can chew either!

I haven’t done an online course, but you probably need to check to see if a cert 4 or Diploma require the completion of other units first.

I know the Open Colleges offer courses which are TAFE and nationally recognised courses.
It also tells you the subjects and potential career options for each certificate.
I’m not sure of the pricing but I think it’s usually around $500+

Thanks for your feedback Imi11. I can do either Cert 4 or Diploma as I have a background in admin. The courses vary in price so much, from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand! Diploma I can get Vet Fee Help (gov’t loan which you pay back gradually once your pay reaches around $53,000) but certificates I would have to pay for.

Open College is one I’m looking at but there are a few others that sound good too. I’ve heard good and bad reviews of most of them. It’s very confusing! Of course they all refer to themselves as the best!
