Nail Biting

It’s not really a beauty question unless it can be considered an anti-beauty dilemma. I’ve a nail biter since I started university that’s now two degrees done (8 years) later and I still can’t shake the habit.

I do it when I’m bored, stressed, constantly at work (stressed often at work) and nothing seems to stop me from doing it. A few months ago I was able to go two weeks without bugging them but then when they grew back uneven I just returned to my old ways.

I’ve tried nail polish (obsessively peel it off when I get one chip) / I’ve tried the stuff you put on your nails that tastes bad but you just get used to it. I bite pen lids too…

But, now that I am in Corporate Law I am pretty embarrassed to shake peoples hands and really should stop doing it.

Anyone a fellow biter? Any things that have helped you to stop?

I also work in law and used to be a terrible nail biter. I have been getting SNS and or gel nails for a few years now and it has worked from keeping me biting! You really cant bite these off without breaking your tooth haha.

I’m a chronic nail biter! I’ve been biting my nails since I was a young child and I never really beat the habit! During my late teens I had acrylic nails, but I’d always end up chewing on them and breaking them anyway. I’m a nurse now so acrylics aren’t even an option! But I am super sick of being embarrassed of my stubby fingernails and they are constantly sore and bleedy, and not to mention my awfully dry cuticles! For me it is a total addiction, and it’s going to be difficult to beat. If anyone has any tips or advice that hasn’t been already mentioned that would be great!

When I was a child I used to bight my nails almost every day and I don’t even remember when I stopped this bad habit.

Today I have well shaped medium length nails and they only become short if they break, which does, unfortunately happen quite regularly.

My nails are never beautiful enough for wearing coloured nail polish but I do cover them every now and then with clear polish.

I do wear coloured nail polish on my toe nails and every now and then I will try to colour my finger nails as well but the colour won’t last long as I can never apply the polish nicely enough – so out comes the nail polish remover and off comes the polish before I venture into the public world.

Just touching in with all my fellow nail biters – any success stories?

I’m happy to report my nails have remained in tact and I am actually liking the look of them having actual nails on them instead of stubs haha

& Congratulations darasparkle! Do your nails & post on the nail thread here: http://www.beautyheaven.com.au/forums/hands-and-feet/what-colour-are-your-nails?page=99999
You can refer back to your dream nails if you have a relapse.

Plus good on you m8 for giving up smoking. I’m sure that was a tough thing to beat. Congrats.

That’s great news darasparkle! I must admit, I’m in a similar boat, and have mentioned it a few times here on bh. I’m a terrible lip biter.

I’ll nibble away until they sometimes bleed. It’s awful and my boyfriend hates it. I can’t remember when I first started it, but it would have been quite a number of years ago, back when I was still in school, I think.

I can’t wear lipstick as it looks so flakey. All I can wear comfortably is the coloured MNY Baby Lips, as it’s still technically a lip balm! And while it’s cheap, I don’t want to wear the same colour to every occasion 😛

I’ve tried before to break this habit, and if you can do it, I think I’ll really try again. We’ll have to encourage each other! I think I’ll try mentioning to people that I’m trying to break an unconscious habit, so hopefully they can help stop me when they see it. Good job on the three weeks! They say it takes three weeks to break a habit, so I’d say you’re heading in the right direction 🙂

Now, that they are actually growing back it’s like wow so that’s how nails should look. Thank you!! It’s been a long/hard road but I am going to keep at it.

Ladies! I am happy to report that I have successfully gone 3 weeks without nail biting 😀 I’v been making a conscious decision when I think about doing it to not and it’s really helped seeing them grow and look healthy.

Guys I am a CHRONIC nail biter – not great given my industry! I’ve been biting since the day I had teeth and have never been able to successfully break the habit. My mum used to put that disgusting tasting polish on my nails, but it didn’t really help. I used to bite them so far down they’d get infected and pussy. Gross.

The only I can suggest is wearing polish. I find that these days I am less likely to bite them when I’m wearing it, however I have to be honest and say it doesn’t completely stop me from nibbling. No word of a lie – I literally just took off some OPI polish I’ve had on for the past couple of days and have already bitten half my nails off.

    GOOD LUCK! x
