Minimalism

Hi all,

I have been reading blogs lately on minimalism which has inspired me to declutter our unit and become slightly more conscious on my purchasing decisions.

I have been slowing culling my wardrobe (perhaps aiming towards a capsule wardrobe???) and have reduced my make up collection (from 9 draws to 2 draws) so far. I have been trying to reduce food wastage and have began decluttering our kitchen – how many dinner sets, platters ect does one even need?!?!?

The hardest part is “letting go” of items in which I have spent/wasted a bit of money on, but i have never used…

Any other tips, thoughts or blog/vlog suggestions?

What a good idea I really need to do this too. I’m going to donate lots of unwanted items to Charity.

Sorry to dig up an old thread but this gets me excited!

I decluttered my makeup bag and simplified my makeup routine and this funny thing happened – I find myself wearing makeup way more often. I think its because now I only have products that I really love and I don’t spend half an hour deciding which colour eye-shadow to wear today.

At the moment my routine is : concealer for under eyes, mineral powder foundation, eye brow powder, choose from one of 3 eyeliners (black, purple, or teal), mascara and lipstick/lip balm. It takes me 10 minutes to do and I do it every day (instead of once or twice a week).

And if you’re into youtubers check out Light By Coco, I love her channel.

You can donate good quality clothing to organisations such as Fitted for Work. They assist disadvantaged women by providing them with business clothing for job interviews. I can’t provide a link to their website because my anti-virus program has got a red flag next to it. I think that they are located in Parramatta, NSW. There is a similar organisation in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane called Dress for Success.

I have been donating all of my unwanted beauty products to a dear friend of mine that is a single mother that struggles to survive financially. I have slowly been building up her stash of products because I was horrified to find out what she had been using on her face. I have also sent beauty products to Miss Danger (a BH forum member) as she recently escaped a domestic violence situation. She said that when she arrived at the shelter, the women only receive the bare basics such as a bar of soap and not much more. If you asked any domestic violence shelter in your local area, they would probably be happy to receive donations.

There is a volunteer organisation called New Day Box that collects beauty products for women escaping domestic violence. They had their second call for donations late last year, and they’ll hopefully do it again this year. Here is a link to their website:

I have donated my good quality bras to Uplift Bras. They collect bras for poor countries such as Fiji and Solomon Islands. Here is a link to their website:

It might make the process easier if you have unwanted items that have not been used to give them to women in need. The Beauty Bank is one organisation that gives care packages to women who have fled their homes due to domestic violence. If you have unwanted toiletries or makeup you can contact Jen Armstrong at the Beauty Bank via the Facebook page or call 0401 045 981.

Oh wow thanks for posting this. I’m going to be very keen to donate this stuff. Thanks

Thanks for this motivating thread Katieloves.
I’m aiming to get rid of any unworn clothing and not buy anything unless I am going to use it.
It’s such a waste to buy things and not use them. I’ve got a bag in my closet where I’m putting aside clothes to take to the charity bin.
I think minimalism is inspiring and I’d love to get to the point where I have only clothes that fit and are wearable in my closet. And I won’t feel guilty about wasting money 🙂

Minimalism is such a wonderful concept to embrace and I probably need to incorporate it more into my life. I’ve already given away my unwanted clothes to charity, and limited the number of makeup and skincare products I buy until I finish using the ones I already have.

I think letting go of things you have bought but realised after that you made a mistake is important as you don’t want them around reminding you of your ‘mistake’. So I think it is better to part with such things. It is also helpful to consider what gives you joy particularly when you are undecided about what to discard. If an item gave you joy in the past but not now, let it go. I find it very satisfying to give unwanted items to charity. I always keep a bag in my wardrobe and put things in it that I try on and don’t want to keep for one reason or another. I am going to start doing that in my study as well.

What a fantastic idea minimalism is. I love the idea of getting by with the bare minimum because it shows you how inventive you can be. I think I read somewhere that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt adhere toa minimalist lifestyle as well. Especially with the amount of travelling that they have to do.

There is a lady on YouTube who has wonderful videos on being organised. Her channel is Home Organising by Alejandra. Whilst you may not need to go to the same obsessive extent she does, she has some amazing ideas on how to maximise your space, regardless of how much space you have.

My next thought would be dividing your things into piles and determine whether it’s something that could never be used by anyone, something that is to be donated, something that is new and could be re-gifted, and whether you want to spend the time to sell it.

Just a couple of thoughts x
