Melatonin have you tried it?

I am heading overseas in 7 weeks time and every time I travel I always struggle the entire time im away with feeling ill and just not feeling 100%. I have always been someone who needs my sleep and if I dont get my required 7 to 8 hours then im a total mess. I spoke to my Doctor yesterday about my concerns for my 7 week long trip and she gave me a script for Melatonin.
I want to know if anyone has ever used it and how it worked for you?
Or do you know of someone who has used it?
And …I notice that you can get it off the shelf at the chemist but im not sure if its just a cheap knock off or if its really exactly the same but half the price….anyone know?
Can anyone tell me how much they paid? Ive been told its expensive but i havent checked with the Chemist as yet.

Ok…so the update is that I checked with Priceline and their price for the genuine Melatonin was $80 for 60 tablets. I then checked with the Chemist warehouse and got the 60 tablets for $64.
After talking to a few different Chemists about it they informed me that you can get the over the counter product but its not the genuine thing and it may or may not work for me. I decided to stick with the real thing for the moment and I will perhaps give the over the counter stuff a go in the future and see if it works for me.

It’s really cheap and readily available without a prescription in the US – if you’re heading that way you might want to stock up there. My husband swears by it.

I’ve never used it personally but i am a nurse in aged care, and multiple residents are prescribed Melatonin but majoirty of them have the liquid form. Most go to sleep within 15-30 minutes of taking it. Around 2ml.

I dont need them for insomnia as such.
I struggle majorly with jetlag and always feel sick when im away and dont come right until I get home. Last time i was away for 6 weeks. This time Im away for just over 7 weeks so the Doc has given me a script for the Melatonin to help me switch my sleeping routine and adapt to a new timezone with the hopes that I wont feel as bad as I normally do.
Ive got 7 weeks to investigate and work out which is the best way to go for me.

    Thanks for your input 🙂

The Pretorius melatonin in the above photo is a homeopathic version of it. The “6X” refers to the potency. It is not a vitamin and it would not be the same as prescription melatonin from a doctor. I have had lots of experience in taking homeopathic remedies, but I haven’t taken any for insomnia.

If I was going to use a homoeopathic remedy, I would recommend seeing a professional homeopath. There are lots of remedies for insomnia, but you would get a remedy based on your unique set of symptoms and constitution.

i’ve only heard good things about Melatonin.

I struggle to sleep sometimes so I was looking into purchasing it to see if it would help..

I wonder if buying it from iherb/vitacost and getting it shipped in is legal (it’s probably cheaper than getting it here), as sometimes some vitamins aren’t eligible for shipping.

    Hi Meedee,

I have used melatonin before, on many occasions, as sometimes I have a hard time falling asleep and like yourself become a mess if I don’t get enough sleep! My doctor actually told me it was a safe and non addictive way of making me sleepy. I purchased it without a script from one of those Vitamin shops and it worked really well. I took it an hour or two before bedtime and I started to feel a bit drowsy and I fell asleep a lot quicker than I normally would. I believe I paid around 25-30 dollars but I’m not quite sure. I posted a photo of the brand that I purchased. Hope that helps! xx
