is it illegal to carry a pocket Knife in your handbag?

A friend of mine carries a pocket Knife in her hand bag, it has a switch on it that you have to pull back in order to lift out the blade and can only be opened with two hands. Is that illegal? (Even if it stays hidden and is only used in emergencys).

I heard Oprah say that we can use our house keys or whatever keys we have to gouge out the attacker’s eyes. Oddly, even if I was being chased or was in danger, I still feel reluctant/uncertain to do that to someone’s eyes. Hope none of us are ever in that situation.

I agree with you…….. Hope none of us are ever in that situation ……..

I would be so scared I would lose my keys!

wow I didn’t even know it was illegal and my friend was just telling me the other day that her friend carries it around :/
but I’m fascinated by some of ur ideas ladies, would kicking them in the nuts and then gouging their eyes work?

In reply to dream-angels: a kick in the nuts sounds like a great idea as long as you don’t miss & get his thigh if he moves. It’s even worse if your attacker grabs your foot! That’s why this self-defence book I read recommended an eye gouge. It’s instinctive, an attacker has to protect his eyes.

MsSparkles: your taxi ordeal sounds so scary. I’m glad you got his details & reported this.

Cat lover: I try to remember how badly women have had it throughout history & rejoice that things are so much better now. Things are slowly improving. There used to be no such thing legally as rape within marriage, this was a “wifely duty”. It was illegal for a woman to seek divorce unless she could prove infidelity. She automatically lost all right to her children.

Nowadays, my sister-in-law earns more than my brother, this is not uncommon. She commutes, he works locally, so he’s the one who & picks the kids up & cooks dinner. My parents can’t understand this.

You’ve got to look at this long term, it’s depressing otherwise. Long term, we’ve got lives & careers & rights our grandmothers never dreamt possible.

I’m sure I’m not the only one here who will never get used to the fact that just by being born female, our lives are always in danger due to male perpetrated crimes. It’s such a terrible injustice that we should even have to worry about any of the matters that are being discussed in this forum, let alone come to terms with the fact that we are even more likely to come to harm in the hands of someone we know.

On the up-side, I’m glad to see that so many ladies here ARE taking precautions in order to keep themselves safe. Unfortunately it’s the only thing we can do in a world where violence against women is out of control. Love and strength to you all x

I always carry a parting comb in my handbag, firstly it’s a comb so you can’t get in trouble for having it and secondly it doubles as a weapon because of it’s pointy end.

I have never had to use it but I would think it would hurt someone enough and hopefully it wouldn’t snap but depends on if you have a solid plastic one or a metal end one and how you use it I guess.

This is a good idea. It’s a nice sharp point – especially if it’s metal. Just thinking about the damage it’d do is making me shudder right now and I would hate to use it but if I was in that situation I would not hesitate.

If I am walking at night if/when my Boyfriend can’t pick me up then I do what some of the ladies here do, put my keys in between my fingers.

I thought I would’ve had to use this method a couple of months ago when a Taxi driver kept driving me in the wrong direction and kept telling me he could turn the meter off if I wanted and I could drive around with him.. He did let me out fortunately, and I did get his taxi number and reported him but I was definitely ready to defend myself.

O wow what a creepy experience for you that taxi ride must have been MsSparkles. I read somewhere that before you get in a cab, always take a picture of the taxi number and text the pic to a friend or family member. That way if something were to happen the family member can report the number to police. Also, seeing you take the pic might scare off drivers with creepy intentions.

I shudder to hear talk about gouging eyes out because I’m studying to become an optometrist :'(
I completely understand the need for self-defense though.

It takes me 10 minutes to find my keys sometimes!

Ha *PrettyPrincess* I’m the same, it takes me forever and that’s usually when my husband is waiting with his hands full with groceries! And when he says he’ll take out his keys, I say, ‘no, no, I’ve got mine, I’ll just find it in a minute’, ha.

It got so bad that I’ve now got my house keys on a lanyard and when I’m out with hubs, and he’s driving, and when we start coming a few streets near our home, I take my lanyard with the house keys and hang it around my neck so that I can open the front door while hubs parks. Otherwise, we’d be there all night. Hopeless.

I just love this – and you, CherryBlossom. What a gorgeous post to come across on a Saturday night – I’m still laughing at the mental images it’s giving me. By the way – you’re anything but hopeless, just completely normal!!

I do love the ingenuity from many of you!!!!!

Yes it is illegal for sure…agree with carrying a can of Impulse spray, but with using capsicum spray……..if the perpetrator is on “ice” this may make them even more violent towards you
