Debutante Dress

Hey Beauties!

Not really beauty related, but I’m making my deb dress for my deb (which is next year in May) and I am wondering if y’all have any tips and tricks for doing this. I am a bit of a newbie, and I’ve read a whole stack of books about sewing, but I still feel super stressed out about doing it. Any advice? Support (lol)? 🙂

Yes, the dress will be white! 🙂 I am lucky to have a separate room at home for sewing, so I have a nice big table to cut on…which is awesome…:) Thanks for the advice misfortune8! 🙂

Thanks so much Steph Speth and misfortune8! I have already bought my fabric (tissue taffeta for the skirt and lace for the top). I made a mock of the top a couple times in calico just to see which size would work because the Vogue pattern I bought said I would be a size 12, when I am usually an 8. The lace I bought for the top was bought in a rush and it turns out to be the worst possible choice of lace! It’s a very thick lace which is really only supposed to be used for embossing or something. So I will have to go back and get a different lace. 🙁 I have already done up the top layer of the skirt (out of the tissue taffeta) and it looks pretty good so far. The bodice is the part that’s stressing me out! I just hope I can get the lace to lie flat! Lol…you would think that my deb is all about the darned dress! 🙂 It’s funny how I’m putting in so much effort into something that I’ll use only once! 🙂

P.S. I’m going to try and find you a photo of the pattern I’m using so you can see…:)

I echo Steph’s advice: calico mock up! You’re wise to have left yourself ample time. Why not whip up some pillowslips & pyjamas just to get some sewing confidence?

If you’re using luxe fabric like silk, satin, georgette or chiffon &c, you’ll need a smaller needle. I often buy needles cheaply at Kmart, but if you need advice about which needle to use for which fabric, ask when you buy the fabric.

If you get some experience sewing the same kind of fabric, you won’t ruin the dress fabric it if it keeps slipping. Slippery fabrics can be difficult to work with. Whipping up a few cheap polyester satin pillowslips will give you the feel you’ll need. You could make a stack of coloured satin pouches to use for wrapping presents. Anything you can think of using a similar feeling fabric. After all this practice, you’ll definitely need to change your needle. Once you’ve got a bit of experience, you’ll save yourself so much money!

    Good luck, Mezzbeth!

That’s exciting!!! I love sewing but I must admit I never find enough time for it nowadays…

Particularly if you’re using expensive fabrics make sure you make a toile or what sometimes people call a muslin, basically a mock up of your dress in Calico. You don’t want to be cutting into expensive silk or georgette without knowing exactly how it will fit you!

And make sure that you have someone help you with your fit. It can be hard to fit yourself because to see you might have to bend forward etc which can mess it up. Get someone else to mark up any adjustments so you can feel certain they’re in the right place.
