Dangers of having a root canal

Hey everybody, Im in a bit of a pickle at the moment. I went to the dentist this morning and found out that one of my front teeth requires a root canal (yay me). And my step dad let me know that theres lots of long term dangers related to having a root canal.

Im a bit overwhelmed by it all, and I don’t really want to have a front tooth pulled out or a 6 grand titanium filling.. So I was wondering if anyone on here had any knowledge, experience or advice about it at all. Heres some the links about the dangers Ive been looking at this afternoon 🙂

And he also said my two bottom wisdom teeth need to come out asap- yay me!

I thought modern thinking was to leave the wisdom teeth in & take out the ones next to the wisdom teeth?
I had mine out when I had a car accident – they thought the wisdom teeth might have been causing the pain I was experiencing & they wanted to eliminate them as a possibility before doing anything else. Dentists since have shaken their heads in dismay! So perhaps the procedure has changed again?
I had all four wisdom teeth removed at the same time & I remember the swelling it gave. I wish I could have had my passport photo taken – I had a truly magnificent shapely jawline! No BS! It was Sigrid-Thornton-esque! Do people these days know who she is? Great jawline!
Naturally the swelling went down & back to my old narrow face shape. 🙁
If I ever get plastic surgery (not likely) I think I’d get jaw implants – seriously I looked _that_ good!

Funny you say that misfortune, I was actually talking to my partner last night wondering if they could pull out my back teeth instead of my wisdom teeth, as the wisdom teeth haven’t come through yet and they would need to cut through my gum to get them out. I had 2 teeth removed on my top jaw to make room for braces years ago so my top wisdom teeth fit in perfectly. I think though that the bottom wisdom teeth are on a bit of an angle and if i don’t have them out they will push against my other lower teeth. I would much rather have my other back teeth pulled as they have deep fillings in them that will probably need more work done later down the track haha.

Im glad you enjoyed your new jawline! My sister in law had her 4 taken out recently and the poor thing looked like a chipmunk haha 🙂

Thanks again everyone for the replies, I had a second dentist take another X-ray of my tooth and i do infact need the root canal treatment they think my braces moving my teeth made the nerve die as I’m in no pain and have no swelling. Im still very anxious but plan to book it tomorrow as I feel its my only option. I looked at an old root canal thread on here http://www.beautyheaven.com.au/forums/dental-care/root-canal-1 and someone else mentioned the potential risks should all the infection not be cleared out. Im worried but yeah, I don’t want to leave the infected tooth there for long!

Hi I’m a dental Assistant and I have seen this in my last 20yrs.going to a specialist will have the best possible out come for root canal because the nerve is removed this leads to the tooth discolouration and becoming brittle. After endnotes specialist visit who will do the root canal for optimum results you should see a crown and bridge specialist for tge tooth to be crowned they will make sure the porcelain crown matches your existing teeth and also make sure that it will protect existing tooth structure. Very expensive but we’ll worth it. Unfortunately there are no garrentees in life but this would give you the best possible chance of success. The other option is a implant after extraction of tooth also this can also have risks involved. If I was given the option I would pick the root canal crown option my opinion. Hope this helps

Firstly, that article is such a load of rubbish.
I’ve had so many root canals on my teeth. Just had another one just recently.
Root canals are a lot better than when I had my first one about 25 years ago. These days, they do it quickly and there isn’t any pain. You might have a bit of discomfort later at night (depends on which tooth) but panadol helps there.
I’d rather have root canal and then a crown then to have a tooth extracted.
Honestly it is much safer having a root canal then reading those rubbish articles on root canal.
When are you having it done?

A root canal is a very unpleasant procedure, but it is hardly that dangerous. It is very common place and very safe as far as I know. I’ve had a root canal done on a back tooth before and I’m still standing (and smiling lol) 🙂

I had a root canal about three years ago and had crown put in as well. Root canal was painless. and I’ve had no issues in past three years. So if you have to, get it done.

Thanks ladies for all your feedback, I really appreciate it! Im not so much worried about the procedure itself, although more the long term effects (the two articles I posted are just the tip of the iceberg) so I’m weighing up any other options and by no means putting it off 🙂 Having 8plus fillings, 2 teeth out to make room for braces, braces them self and just now finding out my two wisdom teeth need to be pulled out- I know the importance of dental health and would never leave an issue like this be. I had an X-ray today and besides finding out about my wisdom teeth, Ill hopefully find out if I ACTUALLY need a root canal or not, it might just be enamel erosion hopefully! Ill have to take the x ray to the dentist to find out soon 🙂 fingers crossed

I’ve heard a number of horror stories regarding root canal, but I think all those people who had it had it done on their molars. I can’t recall anybody having it done on their front teeth.

I do think that fixing up your teeth issues now will save you from a lot of pain (financial and physical) down the track…and this is coming from someone who’s had a number of dental issues in her life (braces, baby teeth out, 2 small fillings – I may have to have my one & only wisdom tooth extracted at some stage & I still have to have veneers put in). Don’t put it off!
