Brisbane Catastrophic Storm

Just hoping everyone that lives in Brisbane is okay after that horrible catastrophic storm yesterday.

Unfortunately, we were coming home from an appointment and there was no getting out of it. We were in the eye of the storm. It was very quick when it struck. It hit with such a massive force when we were all on a main road. All we could do was just sit there and watch as the destructive 140k winds threw branches and debris around all the cars, heavy rainfall and hail that started off as golf ball size to end up as tennis balls size. Our windscreen and car was hammered. Hubby had to lift up the mat on dashboard in case the windscreen smashed. At this time, I was shaking. The road was starting to flood and the car next to me had water nearly reaching his door. Our car is a x-trail so we had a bit more wait…phew.

We had just over 20 minutes of just sitting in a stationary car with nowhere to move.

When we were finally able to start moving on the road, it was so frightening. Water was deep, trees across the highway. We could see further up that no cars were moving so we turned down a street to come face to face with power lines down. Thankfully there was a high part where we could go to the side and go through. We got back on the highway further down to just travel at a crawl. Other cars were asking where we had been and were saying how they could feel our pain.

Our 2 1/2 year old new car has been hammered by the hail. Windscreen is cracked in heaps of places.

It was only the other day we watched the movie Into the Storm and I remember saying to hubby, hope we never see that. Well we have now and we both never want to be in a car with that happening around you.

Anyone else have trouble during the massive storm which I am now hearing was a Category Two cyclone? I can believe that for sure.

Well, we finally got the news re our car. It has been written off. That’s the last we will see of that car now. Feeling rather sad as it was a really good car and also it’s the car that my dad sat in when it was new so it always kept me a bit happy knowing he had been in it. Feels
like a part of me died with the car going but it also means, we are able to get another car.
    New beginnings and journeys.

So pleased you now at least know where you’re at, jatz. I love your last line, “New beginnings and journeys.” May your new journeys be wonderful. Hugs, Hun.

We actually had our swimming pool absolutely shredded by the hail! Needless to say the children weren’t impressed at all.

gee not a good time for you then Vickianne especially with the lovely hot weather we are having and will be having during Summer. I’m just wishing winter would come back now.

Thanks everyone…….we knew the storm was bad when it hit but didn’t realise till we saw the news that it was a cyclone and the worst storm cell to hit here since 1985. Trust us to be in it, we are usually at home but had an appointment at the hospital.
@Growing Old……there was no warning. 25 mins before it showed the dark mass we were walking into the hospital and it was hot and sunny, not a cloud in sight. When we got into our car, it was still fine until we got out of the outside carpark and turned to go up to the highway is when you saw this horrible mass of darkest black we have ever seen. There was nowhere to go because it just hit with heavy rain at first and then the traffic just stopped. The night before the weatherman never mentioned anything about a storm…….I think everyone got a shock when it hit. One of the suburbs that was hit hard was Annerley and that’s where we were……full force of it.
As for our car……we have rung our Insurance company and because you cannot drive it with the windscreen like it is (about to shatter), we are awaiting on a tow truck to take it to the assessors. The whole car except for hubby’s door has been hammered hard from hail. Lights broken, nothing can be saved on it.
It is only now that I am starting to calm down. I haven’t been able to sleep because it was all just too much but writing it here and expressing it all, is actually helping me. Gosh I hope another one never hits anyone like that again, but unfortunately, there are places that do suffer cyclones and golly, gosh…….I feel so sorry for them.
Also glad to hear that other BH’s living up here didn’t suffer anything from that storm cell.
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts 🙂 xxx

Hey there Jatz…Im so glad that you and your partner were safe.
I watched the storm on the radar and could see how crazy it was. It was heading my way but then it went inland and up past us so we didnt even get a single drop of rain.
Im not sure what new channel you watched but they have been giving out misinformation as it was not a cyclone at all. It was a supercell storm with winds that were equal to a Cat 2 cyclone. Cyclones form out at sea and on average you have several days warning that a cyclone is on the way. Cyclones are given names. You get winds and rain coming one way and then they eye where all is calm and quiet and thats when people can think the cyclone is over and then the winds and rain start again but from the opposite direction.

Can you tell im a bit of a weather nut?? Im always watching the radars.

Anyway…sorry about the car but thank goodness you had insurance.
And again im glad you and your partner are ok.

Hi Meedee – yep when I wrote that they were saying it was like a cyclone and then changed it to the supercell storm. We also get the alerts when a storm is coming but weren’t told quick enough about this one unfortunately. When at home, we are always watching the radars…….aren’t they fascinating 🙂 When you see that dark red, runnnnnnnnnn. Yes, I can see you are a weather nut just like us. btw…..if you haven’t already, there is a great site with Higgins Storm Watching that we use on facebook ……we put a video on there also. He is the one that we trust with anything to do with storms happening. He is also puts the amazing photos of storms on there also.
So glad that storm didn’t get you where you are Meedee…..I sort of remember what area you are in.
Thanks for your concern. Yes so glad we have car insurance. Just don’t know how long everything is going to take now. We are carless.

hehe….yup…I know Higgans Storm Chasing very well….I used to get invited to there BBQ catch ups…I never attended and now dont get the invites…lol
At one stage i was thinking of becoming a home weather reporter for the BOM…thinking about it was as far as I got.
