A question for those who work in retail re price matching

Just wondering if someone can clarify how price matching works…

I was in a shop today who says that they price match. However, they wouldn’t price match when I told them that the product is currently advertised elsewhere half price as this is a ‘catalogue special’ and not that store’s regular selling price.

Is this how it’s supposed to work?

I work at Coles and I was told by a manager that if a customer has a catalogue or some other physical form of evidence of a current special for some where else, then we can price match. Every where is different though and would have their own policies and procedures etc of doing things.

@ Kamillyon: I never heard of coles price matching. Wow I wouldn’t mind doing all my shopping from coles if they did that. Is that a recent scheme?

I worked for years at a hardware store that rhymes with Runnings. We would price match to either a written quote or we’d call the nearest store (if it was a chain) to get their price. Competitor catalogues worked just as well. We had a policy of better to price match than not. Honestly, I’d make a complaint if they aren’t honouring their policy.

I have never heard Price matching with makeup.

If you can do that OMG could you imagine when Priceline had the 40% 2 day sale.

I second that it depends on who you purchase it from, every store has a different policy.

I think it really depends on the retailer. I’ve certainly heard of retailers price matching for retail prices only and this would exclude any item that’s on sale etc.

I’ve just done a quick google, and some places won’t price match on clearance items. So i’m not sure if maybe that was why? Like Big W for example.

    What was the item?

I know places price match on white goods, electronics and game consoles.

I am also pretty sure they have to call the nearest store (with the same special) and that store must have it in stock. Maybe they already knew the closest store did not have it.

Maybe call Head Office and ask then make a complaint.

It was just a make up item so not a big ticket item or anything like that. I won’t make a complaint though as I can’t really be bothered. I’ll just vote with my feet 🙂

I thought it was a bit strange. They even went and checked with their manager and they confirmed that they wouldn’t match it. I even assured them that I only wanted one thing and wasn’t going to wipe out their whole stock or anything lol 😀

Spend your money elsewhere! They obviously don’t want your business. There’s plenty of others out there who do!
