Wisdom teeth removal

Hi guys,
I am going to have 2 wisdom teeth removed sometime next month, and I am a bit nervous about it. (and my mom is freaking out coz she’s worrying it will affect my health).
So I am taking a sedation dentistry, that is to be put into sleep and have the doctors done the surgery.

If any of you has this experience before, I would love you to share it. Examples: symptoms after surgery, pain, how long you are able to work again, etc …

help!

I had mine out using sedation.It was a really good way to have it done. Afterwards came home and slept as I was groggy but things went well and recouperation was fast and easy.
I wouldn’t hesitate to have my wisdom teeth out this way again it was almost pleasant( if that’s possible) !!

I had my thirds removed under general anesthesia. No pain during or immediately after surgery. The process was quick and painless. Just make sure to follow the surgeons instructions of when to take your medication and what foods are on the avoid list. If you have any questions or are in pain that can’t be controlled by the meds, then call the DR. They will instruct you on how to rinse and what other measures you can take. If the DR or nurse asks you to come in, they check to make sure you are healing properly, they may or may not place packing in the socket. That depends on the office procedures. It took me about a week before I felt 100% but I had 6 teeth removed and they were all fully impacted in the bone.

you will be fine! seriosuly nothing to worry about! i have had 8 teeth removed! 4 when i had braces and i had to get all 4 of my wisdom teeth out (they had been coming through since i was 12)

the roots were really close to my nerves so i had to be put under for it. i even woke up half way through and they had to put me under again. trust me its not bad at all! i was a bit scared before hand but all was good.

you will be given some gauze afterwards to bite down on as your whole lower face is numb and you may bleed but mainly drool lol

as soon as it was done i went and got my lip pierced because it was numb! (against the dentists orders off course) and then had a meal which i found a bit hard to eat as my face was numb

but after all that wears off i was in no pain at all. i could feel the stiches which was a bit annoying and becareful when you eat sharp things eg: packet of chips as you forget there is no tooth there and try to chew with your gums lol

i hope everything goes well for you but seriously dont stress all will be fine ! =)

oh and you get a script for panadiene forte afterwards ( i didnt take it because i had no pain) but seriosuly dont worry about the pain

oh and sorry to rant and clog up this feed but i went to school the next day (this all happend when i was 16 so a few years back) so you should be fine for work the next day =)

This topic is pretty timely for me as I’m about to see a dentist about a possible impacted wisdom tooth. :( I had one wisdom tooth out when I was about 20. Now I’m 37 and have just noticed this weird extra tooth growing near my back molar. Crazy!

I’m nervous as heck about getting it extracted even though I’ve had it done before. I’ll be interested to hear what he says because there may be 2 other wisdom teeth lurking about that might need to go as well. I’m sort of hoping he will recommend I go see a surgeon and get sedated but at the same time I worry about the cost! I don’t think my HBF covers it.

I had all four removed under sedation over ten years ago, and would have to say that the lead-up anxiety was far worse than the surgery and it’s aftermath. Mine were badly impacted which resutled in a lot of swelling in my face afterwards – there’s no wasy I would have gone back to work (or been seen anywhere in public) for a few days afterwards. It was a week before I could chew solid food. The most important thing to remember is to take your anti-biotics, and to keep the wounds clean with salty water after the proceedure. Good luck ladies. I had all 4 removed a few years ago and it wasn’t too bad. You’re drugged up a bit and can only eat slushy foods (jelly, ice cream, etc) and after about 1 week you’re pretty good to eat almost normally again. I was under general anesthetic.

The pain isn’t too bad when on meds just make sure you don’t become addicted!

Hi. Don’t worry. I’ve had 4 teeth out under anaesthtic (molars) in hospital and then 2 wisdom teeth out (under anaesthetic, in the chair). Don’t worry about the proceedure, they do it all the time!

Make sure you keep ice on your face for at least a few days after. This will reduce the swelling and the bleeding. Afterwards you will need to bite down on gauze for the remainder of the day and possibly the next day as the wounds will bleed a little – this is normal. Also, you’ll have to rinse regularly with salty water (not a fun experience, but it’s necessary to keep the wounds clean and free of infection). You’ll also have a weird curved syringe you fill with salty water to clean out around the stitches. Make sure you don’t get any food stuck in there. But they will tell you all this after the op!

You might feel a little bit nauseous after. This can be from the anaesthetic or also from any blood you may have swallowed during the op. Again not something to worry about – unless you actually start vomitting. Then I would go to your doctor to get something to settle your stomach (I had to do this as I was actually allergic to the antibiotic they prescribed me… but it’s pretty uncommon to be allergic to them…. I just have a bad family history with allergies)

Also, they usually prescribe an antibiotic to make sure you don’t get an infection, and also strong pain killers like panadine forte. To give you an idea of pain, I couldn’t take panadine as I’m allergic to codeine and I was fine just taking regular panadol and nurofen (you can take these at the same time)

The stitches will fall out on their own after about 10 days I think. I’m pretty sure I swallowed some of mine in my sleep, but it won’t hurt you. The rest I just felt fall out and then spat out into a tissue (sounds gross, but well, what else do you do with it?). I went back to my surgeon for a check up within a week (before the stitches fell out) and he was happy with it all.

Sleeping was a bit of a pain, as I like to sleep on my side. But you find a way to get comfortable. I found it best to prop myself up on quite a few pillows (almost like i was sitting).

You are usually given your surgeon’s number (mine even gave me his personal mobile number!) so if you fall into any trouble, you can give them a call and they’ll let you know exactly what to do. Or, you can always just call your GP.

I think for most people they go back to work after a few days. I had a week off due to my allergic reaction.

Also, you’ll probably live off soft foods and soup for at least a few days – maybe even a week. Depends on the individual and when you feel you can start chewing basically. I just chewed things with my front teeth until I felt I could use my molars again. It’s a good excuse to eat custard and jelly. yum!

I got two pulled 2 months ago. What the dentist did was gave me a shot in my arm to put me to sleep. It is just a little sting. Then I woke up and it wasn’t really all that bad. My face was swollen it is just a little bit sore.

i had my wisdom tooth removed last year and it wasn’t really bad like i thought it would be. i took sedation dentistry as well and i couldn’t feel anything . i took pain killer at during the night just to help me sleep. good luck with it , and don’t stress much about it .

I had all 4 of mine out, and I was fine :) I was eating soft foods that night and was eating like normal within days. You’ll get a script for pain relief but I only used it for a couple of days. It’s really not a big procedure at all, there’s honestly nothing to worry about :)

I’ve had 3 out and only one more to go. The bottom teeth are the worst since it’s connected to your jaw. The most recent one I had was my top and it only took one day for recovery. So which ones are you getting pulled out? Honestly the worst part would have to be the needle injection when they’re anesthetising you.

I’d recommend drinking heaps of milk through a straw after they’ve been pulled out. I remember the medication made me super drowsy which wasn’t aided by the heat last year.

I agree with everyone else here, Don’t worry! The worry is worse than the procedure in most cases! I had all 4 of mine out at once under general anasetic and didn’t find the whole thing too bad. Once i woke up my face was swollen and a bit painful but nothing OTT. Make sure you keep ice on your face for most of the first day or two as it stops the swelling, and follow their instructions about rinsing with salt as its really important to stop any infections. Take painkillers if you need to (they usually prescribe something strong) and you should be fine. make sure you follow food instructions also (i think its no solid or hot foods for first day) so you don’t damage the stitches etc. You will prob want a few days off work (it will mainly be the anasectic that may affect you and could make you extra sleepy or a bit nauseous) and your face could be quite swollen. Nothing too much to worry about thouh :)

the most anxiety is the build up to it but you’ll be fine. you’ll not even feel a thing because you’ll be under. i do this procedure with people awake in the chair and they always say it wasn’t as bad as they thought!
you will most likely have stitches that will self dissolve in 10-14 days. they will become very annoying for you!
sleep with your head propped up. do warm salty mouth rinses 3 times a day for a week. most importantly DO NOT SMOKE! smoking affects the blood clotting and will delay healing. Apply ice pack to the face as you may be a little swollen. stick to soft foods. you will be groggy after the sedation but the next day you’ll be a little sore where the teeth have been taken out and also at the back of the mouth where the injection has been given may be a little tender.

its good to alternate ibuprofen with panadine forte (this is paracetamol and codeine). The ibuprofen acts as a local pain killer and also reduces inflammation. take one of these as soon as possible after the op (on a full stomach) and 4 hours later, take the panadine forte (which acts as a more generalised pain killer). 4 hours later, take the ibuprofen again…keep alternative at 4 hourly intervals. the idea of this is to keep the pain relief at a high and stable level. If you take them all at once, your pain relief will keep peaking and dropping.

Also going to have 4 molar teeth removed, for braces.

Also I would love to know how long the swollen will diminished, as I am going to start my first graduate job 5 days after the surgery …

Ive had 4 wisdom teeth removed in the chair at the maxillo facial surgeons office and i was fine, only 1/4 of my face swelled where 1 tooth was more difficult to remove. It was difficult to drink straight after the procedure because my face was so numb, I had to hold my lips closed around a straw cos i couldnt get any suction LOL!
If you have it done in hospital under general anesthetic you will be knocked around a bit more as it takes longer for the anesthetic to wear off. When my operation was done all i remember was walking into the elevator, i dont remember getting out of the chair or my partner paying the bill so only conscious recovery time was about 10 mins (i think) where the hospital it can take a few hours for the meds to wear off.
The pain killers i got were pretty awesome too, although i didnt need to take many cos i want in that much pain (and the tablets were super constipating) but while taking them i would happily stare at a wall in a daze until i was hungry or sleepy, i imagine that is what being a baby feels like. I felt ready to be back at work after 3 days cos i was so bored at home but i had already arranged a whole week off. I was eating solids in my front teeth after 2 days.
As long as you keep your mouth clean and follow the doctors advice to the letter it will heal the quickest. The skill of the surgeon also helps things settle quicker.

hi theoryworkbook…the swelling will vary greatly depending on how easy the teeth are to get out, whether it gets infected or not and how quickly you heal as an individual so it isn’t possible to say. you may not even get any facial swelling :)

Having 6 teeth removed is a big job and would probably put you out for awhile. I’m sure if you let your new employer know, they will be understanding. You won’t know how the anaesthetic and the procedure will affect you until after the surgery. I actually had my wisdom teeth out the day after I got offered a new job. I let them know about it in the interview, and they were happy to give me 2 weeks until I started so I had plenty of time to recover. You could be fine after 5 days, or you might need a few extra days. Best to contact your employer in advance and let them know your concerns. Good luck!

P.S. in regards to the swelling. If you keep ice on the jaw from when you get out of surgery for the rest of the day, as well as the next day, you’ll probably have pretty much no swelling. The longer you keep the ice on, the less swelling and bruising you will get. At least this was the case for me. Remember to have some breaks in between ice packs though.

I’m getting two horizontally impacted wisdom teeth out this year. My consultation with a maxillofacial surgeon isn’t until late April but i’m aching to know how much it will cost. Does anyone have any idea of the cost – without health insurance ?? I do believe they will put me to sleep for the surgery.Thanks x
