Organic/natural sunscreen recommendations?

Just getting ready for summer early :)

soleo sunscreen is quite good.

Natural Instinct is an affordable natural mineral sunscreen. I recommend you go to their website: http://www.naturalinstinct.com.au/Products/index.htm to have a look.

Burts Bees makes a sunscreen, and so does UV Natural but I’m not sure if either are fully natural/organic.

I agree with PrettyPrincess though, the Soleo Organics one is great.

In my health food shop there are stacks to choose from. I don’t remember all the brand names but there are heaps of them and generally pricier than normal sunscreens too. You could check out your local health food shop.

I have sensitive skin and find the Jurlique sun lotion great. Makes the hours following being outdoors more pleasant.

has anyone used the QV sunscreen +moisturiser product?

Sugarr yes I have tried the QV face moisturiser with sunscreen in it. I love the rest of the QV face range but this one actually stung my sensitive skin! I didn’t want to waste the tube so I used it on the rest of my body as a sunscreen moisturiser and it was fine, but not for my face.

bk I found the qv moisturiser with spf stung my skin too…

Yeah Elmo I found that really strange, because my skin is not usually that sensitive to face sunscreens that aren’t for sensitive skin! I was breaking out a bit when I was using it too so I’m thinking there may be a link there. Won’t be buying that one again, but still love the rest of the range!

The qv one also stung my face but i think my skin i just sensitised now so it can’t take many things these days.

I’m currently using the Soleo one and I’m pleased with it so far. It’s quite thick (had trouble squeezing it out of the tube) and is white due to the high zinc content, but I don’t think it made my face too white but I’m not dark to begin with so not sure about that. Once it’s on it feels slightly oily due to the oils that they’ve pumped into it, but it absorbs fast and leaves a slightly dewy look. I wouldn’t say greasy although skin is slightly shiny. Pop some mineral foundation on top and it’s great =)

So if you’re into a natural/organic it might be a good one to try. FYI- it is Aussie made and owned (Perth) although their website is based in the USA for some reason.

Hmm another one who gets stinging from the so-called “sensitive skin” moisturiser. How strange!

well actually its their entire range that I seem to be reacting to. It’s very strange as they were my saviour from a horrid skin condition. I guess poeple’s skin changes so while it says sensitive there would always be a small percentage that’s just too sensitised for it.

Yeah true. There will always be ingredients in there that some people are allergic to. I haven’t had problems with the rest of their range though, just the sunscreen moisturiser!

Hey has anyone trie the Natural instinct mineral sunscreen that Squeeshed mentioned? I just recently bought it and I’m not sure I like it. I’ve only been using it on my neck and chest (the only skin that is exposed in winter and I have a face one for my face) and my neck has been all dry and itchy! Sunscreens are normally greasy not drying. I’m confused! Anyone else had this problem?

Hi bk. Have you heard the latest about Natural Instinct. A lot of consumers were shocked and upset to hear about the deliberately misleading and deceptive conduct of this company to enable them to market their products as all natural/organic including much of their baby care range!!

The ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) ruled in April that the Natural Instinct and Organic Instinct range of so-called ‘natural’ skin and hair care products carried inaccurate ingredient information and failed to list chemicals such as sodium laureth sulphate, cocamide DEA and cetrimonium chloride as ingredients. They also found that claims – “made with/from 100% pure oils and certified organic herbs” – misleading or deceptive because they imply that the products contain significant amounts of herbs and oils, when certain products only contain 0.2% to 0.6% of herbs and oils.

It’s about time action was taken against companies like these – let’s hope this is a warning to others.

bk – I would be careful of that NI sunscreen – like naturalgirl said – they got into a lot of trouble recently for not publishing all their ingredients on their products – they were deliberately deceitful about it – so I would be wary of using any of their stuff now.

Personally I would recommend Invisible Zinc products – they are very unlikely to irritate as they are chemical free – it’s zinc instead of chemical sunscreen – which is generally much more tolerable by sensitive skins and also non pore clogging as it just sits on top of the skin and isn’t absorbed. They’ve got a great range of products suited for all different situations – I personally use the tinted daywear and it’s all but replaced my foundation these days! I recommend you check them out :)

elmo – do you use the light or medium IZ tinted daywear? How dark/light is the medium? I’m thinking of trying it out, but not sure which one to go for!

Skitz I use the light – I’m quite fair though – if you’re more olive skinned you’d probably be better off with the medium tint. I think adorebeauty are selling mini bottles of the medium tint at the moment if you wanted to try?

I think I’ll go with the medium – I like being tanned (from a bottle of course!) so the darker one will be best methinks :-)

I am using the medium one and it is perfect for me colouring and I am fairly fair just not white, more lightly tanned I guess.

Sorry to take so long to respond to this post!! Thanks Naturalgirl and Elmo.. Yes I had heard about the trouble with NI but wasn’t entirely sure what it was all about. Thanks for the info guys. I have since stopped using the sunscreen anyway but I will definitely not be buying any of their products in the future! Its funny that as soon as I stopped using it my skin stopped being dry and itchy. Not a fan of that sunscreen at all!!

Does a ‘natural sunscreen’ ever exist? I dont think so, because for a sunscreen to protect it should have either a physical protectant to ward of the rays like zinc or have chemicals which filter the UV rays by a chemical reaction they undergo when lights hits them, like cinnamates, benzones and imadazole compounds. And chemicals are not always bad. If you check the active ingredients in ‘natural’ sunscreens I’m sure you’ll find one of these things.
Please correct me if I’m wrong.

I think by natural they mean no chemicals – ie zinc is just a physical blocker and does not penetrate the skin with chemicals like a traditional sunscreen.
