Does the Devil really wear Prada?
Every budding student who’s trying to score a job in the competitive publishing industry would have watched The Devil Wears Prada to give them an insight.
It can easily woo and lure you in with all the glamour, designer clothes and the beauty cupboard that is bigger than your room. The ‘real’ world is nothing like the movies (where’s my knight in shining Armani?).
Debbie, the editor of Beautyheaven, always has a warm smile and is far from Meryl Streep’s character ‘Miranda Priestly’. Work is fast-paced but not the running around type. Instead, everyone’s seated as you hear fingertips furiously tapping the keyboard, the mouse clicking away and coffee mugs clinking.
What you might not know is that there are a lot of the ‘behind the scenes’ jobs to be done – updating the products, pricing and packing gifts to the members takes a lot of time. And no, I do not grab Starbucks for my fellow colleagues.
The perks are being able to see products before they hit shelves, getting exclusives with events and sales, and meeting wonderful people in what seems like the ‘cut throat’ industry!
My name is Kieu and I’m interning at Beautyheaven for two weeks so I can experience the ‘real’ world. Why Beautyheaven? Well, I do love make-up and because the Internet is an emerging professional publishing platform.
My future dream job is to become Beauty Editor for a major publication.
What’s your dream job? If you already got it, how did you get there?
