Totally agree with all these do's and don'ts - I would also add that dental care is even more vital than skin care if you want your teeth to last a lifetime, and look good along the way. Sure there are lots of procedures available these days so that keeping all your teeth is possible regardless of the problem, but the cost can be outrageous, and the treatment not without considerable discomfort - far better to establish a regular oral hygiene routine early in life, and stick to it faithfully.

I had to laugh (though I shouldn't have) at the don't use your teeth to open bottles. It seems such an obvious thing not to do but I'm sure there are some beer drinkers out there who do this. As for myself, I always tell myslef that I need to floss, but I just never do though I do brush religiously twice a day. I've never heard of a gum massage before but if I'm going to start to floss I may as well add that too. Thanks Carli for the helpful tips.

Well I certainly brush twice a day and gargle with mouthwash twice a day, I also have my toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and brush in small circular motions. I get a checkup twice a year, and although I do all of these things, I still end up with cracked teeth. But that is more because I grind my teeth in my sleep. I have in the past been known to crunch on ice, but I certainly dont do that anymore. The main thing that I am missing is the flossing, cause I always forget. Doh!

A dentist once told me to brush in a completely different way to what I was doing and it felt really awkward and strange but after a while I adjusted to 'his' way. I'm glad I did because it really helped my teeth and gums. I also used to brush really hard (we were told to do that as kids!) but now I brush them really gently. I'm always telling my kids to brush their teeth really well but brush them very gently.
I could floss more than what I do - so maybe a new year's 'revolution'?!

It's hard to visit the dentist even once a year if you can't afford what they will find. I hadn't been for 4 years and was still carrying a temporary crown (couldn't afford a new crown). I just went to the dentist using that scheme for people with chronic condition (didn't know it existed). I was dreading what he would find. Only 4 small fillings, another crown needed. He said my teeth weren't too bad for not having gone for so long. I don't floss every day because I find it really hard (always thinking will pull a crown out).
I am liking that idea of massaging the gums every day. :-)

Probably not! lol. I had a question tho ... I heard somewhere that mouthwash isn't really that effective?? CANNOT for the life of me remember where I read it ... but was just wondering if anyone else has heard the same?

Yes, i look after my teeth very well. I'm 21 and ive never needed a filling. My teeth are perfect and naturally straight, so I keep them in perfect condition by brushing them twice daily. I protect my enamel at all costs, i don't want weak enamel. I refuse to use teeth whitening products because that can damage your enamel. I keep them white by looking after them really well, I don't smoke or drink, and i hardly drink coffee. If i am drinking a soft drink, i will drink it though a straw.

I'm well aware of how to look after my teeth as I have braces and will have them for another 2 years. However I only have to floss my teeth once every night. I have inherited yellow teeth from both my mum and my dad (it can be genetic) so there's not a hope for me there. They were also really crooked and my brother has the same problem. Getting it fixed now and I'm 22. It's a real pity it's so expensive because not straightening them early on can cause holes through no fault of your own because it was impossible to clean them properly!
So glad Im getting them fixed now, will definitely look after my teeth because I know how much they cost!!

I didn't know that sucking on ice cubes could crack my teeth. Eek! I've been doing that every time I get ice cubes in my drinks!

Well, I have some of the worst inherited teeth that I have ever seen so I feel I drew the short straw there.

I do brush twice a day, though when it comes to flossing I need to put in more effort. I use to be obsessive about it, carrying floss everywhere i went. Need to find a happy medium this year.

My dentist has always told me that I only need to floss at night before bed. But I do need to make sure I get checkups abit more regularly.

I've been ultra-careful about my teeth since childhood (esp. after my braces!). These are all great tips: but I had to laugh at the "buy new toothpaste every three months". It doesn't get a chance to reach 3 months of age around my house!

Great tips BH! I have always looked after my teeth, brush them twice daily - sometimes three if im going out, and try to remember to floss, although I could do it a bit more often. Never liked the alcohol contents in mouth wash, so the Listerine Zero was a great find, thank again to BH! I use an electric toothbrush, and my dentist always comments on my healthy and nice looking teeth. I have grown up going to the dentist twice a year, but now I just go once a year on my dentists' recommendation. I actually just got the reminder in the mail during the week! It may not be cheap to go, mine charges around $80 for a check, but I believe that by going regularly, problems will be found before they turn into major ones, and it will save you money long term.
