I can't help but do a big toothy grin. At our wedding our photographer kept getting me to do closed mouth smiles but we didn't end up selecting any of those as they looked fake and not at all like me.

I think on some it looks fine, however when I do a closed mouth grin it looks like grin and bare it. lol I like to show teeth, as I think it's more natural for me and looks like I'm actually happy. :D

I think you can do closed mouth smiles as it is not just your mouth that smiles. Its the twinkle in your eyes and your whole demeanour that completes a smile. I don't think all the people featured were trying to smile.

I prefer open smiles, they seem so much more natural and genuinely happy. That's just my opinion though :D

When you're really really happy it's hard to smile with your mouth closed, it's just natural for you to grin a big toothy grin :D I don't think I suit the closed mouth smile.. I'm generally always grinning my head off anyway :D

I mostly have the biggest open smile on my face, but I do have a few photos with a closed smile (they were candid shots, so didn't look fake). In general, I find the closed smiles a bit fake, but Nicole looks lovely with the closed smile.
Some of those "smiles" I wouldn't even call that though :D

Generally I find it looks really awkward. I think some people can pull it off, I am certainly not one of them!

To me, they all look kinda fake. It's looks more like they are putting on a face for the camera. I think true happiness is always accompanied with a big cheesy open grin.

I think a closed mouth smile makes you look like you are hiding something!!!!!!

I smile with my mouth closed - I find smiling with my teeth makes my eyes look too tiny and cheeks too puffy

I love Nicole Kidman's smile! She looks like she's trying to stop herself from laughing (in a good way). Everyone else looks meh, especially Paris, she always has the SAME expression/smile..
I always smile with my mouth closed, I hate my teeth and my husband always tries to make me smile in pics and I just hate it! :)

Closed mouth smiles have a tendency to look like a smirk lol but for a true smile I think teeth need to be seen.

Some look like their not really feeling like smiling at that moment. Surprisingly, Paris Hilton's close lipped smile looks quite serene and I think Nicole Kidman's is ok too but she is showing a hit of teeth.

Any smiles a true smile if you arent posing for a photo or being conscious of how you smile.
I'm with you Morrigan, I hate my teeth too so I always smile with my mouth closed. Thanks to my braces within the next year hopefully I'll be able to smile and show my teeth!!! Yay!!!!
I have a few really genuine photos of me smiling with my mouth shut which I really like. If you mean it it doesnt come across fake.

Actually a few of these smiles make the ladies look as if they would rather be elsewhere. A smile should come easily without trying too hard, otherwise it looks fake.

I think the trick to smiling with your mouth closed is smiling 'with your eyes'. :)

When you show teeth your eyes automatically 'smile' but with a closed mouth that's harder to do about looks more fake
