Do you want to know which fashion and beauty trends you should be rocking this autumn?

As the colder months creep closer, we start drifting further away from pretty summer dresses and catch ourselves eyeing off gorgeous over-the-knee boots, cashmere cardis and searching for trend advice and wardrobe inspiration all around us.

Fear not, trend searchers. As usual, we’ve got what you need. We’ve dipped our toes into the fashion pond to bring you the trend report for the coming chilly months. Better still, we’ve done our homework and scoured the glossy globe to bring you the hair and make-up looks that are both bang-on-trend this season, and will act as the icing on the cake to your fabulous foray into fashion this autumn.

The trend: colour blocking

Nothing lifts a typically grey and dreary pre-winter wardrobe than a colour injection that makes you stand out from the crowd. Think bright mini dresses (layered over autumn-appropriate tights of course!), coloured blouses and even vibrant shoes that are sure to get attention. Team a shot of fuchsia or tangerine with black, or wear two bright hues together for a look that will make you feel glam and get you into party mode quicker than a shot of disco juice!

Get the look:

Glassons Bow Front Coat, $72.89, 0800 45277667

Zipporra Brazely Dress, $80, 0402 606 034

Dotti Fashion Seam Tube Skirt, $39.95, 1800 653 187

MINKPINK Guest List Mini Skirt, $54, 02 8970 7300

Team with… single-shade strands:

After chatting to Harry Josh, International Creative Consultant for John Frieda and total hair guru to the stars, we learned that block colour is has extended to hair colour too. Think Rooney Mara’s jet-black crop, or Gwyneth’s silky blonde strands and you’ll be on the right track. And to help, John Frieda has released new Precision Foam Colour, an easy-to-use at-home hair colour that provides sophisticated, salon quality results from the comfort of your own bathroom.

Team with… moody make-up:

Nude lips and manicured brows are the order of the day with this look. Team your statement outfit with a toned-down make-up look that acts as a perfect canvas for colour, but don’t forget definition where it counts – your brows! Get Camilla Belle-style brows with the fabulous MAC Brow Finisher, a wax-style tool that works to shape and hold brows in place while providing them with a conditioned and polished finish.

For your lips, keep it light and neutral for a subtle yet stunning result. We love essence XXXL Nudes Lipgloss, as it delivers high shine, a slight tint and a nourishing hit of vitamin E – all for under $5.

The trend: shimmer and lace

To take an outfit from day to night, all it takes is a bit of sparkle or a hint of something eye-catching or a little bit sexy. Lace and sequins are back in a big way, with celebrities everywhere opting for feminine lace gowns and flashes of sequin on the red carpet. Take style notes from celebrities like Blake Lively, Rose Byrne and Stacey Keebler, who both tap into the trend with a sense of old-school glamour and new-age finesse.

Get the look:

Witchery Structured Lace Dress, $269.95, 1800 033 465

Sportsgirl sequinned skirt, $99.95, 1300 250 100

Team with… angular/blunt hair:

Sequins and lace are great, but totally girly. Turn up the sex factor with a sharp, angular hair cut that will have you looking less cute, more confident. A Rooney Mara fringe, or a sharp Rose Byrne bob will help to ensure you look sleek and sophisticated instead of pretty and girly when you’re rocking that super feminine frock.

Team with… perfect skin and smoky eyes:

A party look almost always calls for a seriously gleamy complexion and a smoky eye. Take the proper steps to ensure your skin looks creamy and clear, almost like it’s been airbrushed. For this, you’ll need a great concealer like Youngblood Ultimate Concealer, which covers all imperfections big and small – yet still manages to feel light and look natural - as well as a long-lasting foundation. We love Mirenesse Velvet Maxi Lift Foundation as it’s water and perspirant-resistant for up to 18 hours and provides a youthful, airbrushed result!

Finish off your look with a sweep of dark shadow, either as a smoky liner over your top lash line, or a more detailed smoky eye. No matter which look you choose, the Bourjois Smoky Eyes Eyeshadow Trio shows you how to achieve the perfect smoky look in just three steps.

The trend: faux fur

Unleash some of your animal magnetism by getting fur-ocious this autumn – of the faux variety of course!

Stars like Kate Moss and Kim Kardashian are embracing the fur trend, and have even made it a chic option for hitting the town at night. There are many different ways to sport faux fur, but we’re loving the full jacket option. If that’s a little too much, try wearing a faux fur vest over a long-sleeved.

Get the look:

Just Jeans Longline Fur Vest, $79.95, 1800 001 185

Glassons Animal Effect Fur Jacket, $80.99, 0800GLASSONS.

Team with… two-toned tresses:

Nothing says Brit IT girl like a two-toned mop of hair a la Alexa Chung. Teaming your balayaged chop with a fur vest is like putting bread with butter – it just works. For the most on-trend look, stay away from regular brown/blonde balayage – instead, tint your ends just a few shades lighter, or apply blonde to the ends of ruby red locks for a really show-stopping look! Schwarzkopf Nordic Streaking Kit Ultra-M1 will work to lighten your ends, just apply in an unstructured manner, running your fingers through the lower lengths of your hair and distributing product as you go.

Team with… bronzed cheeks and bitten lips:

Take the best bits of the summer and winter months with you by teaming sun kissed bronze cheeks with berry-coloured lips a la Lea Michelle. We love Avon Glazewear Crystals High Definition Lipstick in Rose with Gold for its shimmery plum finish.

A faux fur vest would be the perfect accompaniment to turn up the heat when the winter chills start to show up, so teaming it with this bronzed berry look would make for one seriously ice-melting makeover.

The trend: high necks and long skirts

The more conservative trend out of the bunch, ‘less is more’ has never been made truer than with this look. Unleash your inner lady and get prim, proper and totally pretty with these too-cute trends that will have you looking and feeling oh-so feminine. Mimic Kate Bosworth’s style by picking a pastel piece when rocking this look, and don’t forget the perfect hair and make-up to match…

Get the look:

by johnny. Back to basic top - grey spray, $49.95,

Princess Polly Honey Bunch dress, $70, 07 5556 0806

Supre Hipster Maxi Skirt, $28, 02 8596 8456

Team with… a topknot:

Take casual cool to a whole new level by teaming a neck lengthening, totally on-trend topknot with a high neck shirt or floor length skirt. Opt for a top-of-head bun like JLo, or a more level-headed knot like Kate – either way, you’ll be rocking this trend right.

Team with…radiant skin and bright lips:

For the dreamiest dewy skin, choose a moisturising foundation that covers imperfections. CLINIQUE Repairwear Laser Focus All-Smooth Makeup SPF 15 softens lines and nourishes skin, while ensuring a dewy, young-looking finish. For skin so radiant it stops people in the street, apply cream illuminator to your cheekbones and eyelids. Napoleon Perdis Light Patrol is perfect for this, as the consistency is creamy without feeling wet, and has five shades that are bound to suit all complexions.

For the lips, Lancôme Color Fever Gloss in Hot Number is perfect if you’re after a super shiny fuchsia shade that is sure to add a dose of high voltage glamour to this casual chic look.

I love all the muted tones of autumn, and cant wait to bring my boots out again, although I would prefer if summer would last a little longer. And I would love a red coat too.

Love the fake fur in winter, so cuddly. I got 2 vintage shawl wraps from a market in the summer for only 50cents each. Now I will have a chance to wear them since it is the winter fashion.

Also love the fact full length straight maxis are in, they are really slimming, only problem is that sometimes they are too long and I find myself standing on them.

Eh maybe lace but only really subtle things. I love colour but I'd feel like I stepped into the 80's wearing more than one colour piece. Hey, that's what fashion is though, recycled!

The huge and badly coloured in eyebrows pic that was featured as the Altuzarra SS12 Ny fashion week image looked a bit frightening to me.

I like colour blocking, but my skin tone is not good with a lot of bright colours so there's only a few shades I can really rock. Love the high neck (Isabelle Lucas' dress looks amazing) and they're a really easy trend to wear.
Not liking the two tone hair trend.
Fur is a great way to keep warm - I think I'm going to invest in a nice fur jacket for this winter, I have a feeling it's going to be a cold one. Lace always makes me look a little too goth because Im so pale so I might skip that one. Sequins are great when they're done properly but so expensive!

What a fabulous article - you've included everything a gal needs to create the looks, definitely one of the best you've put together, more please bh!

Loving the fake fur jacket, the sequined skirt, and a little bit of lace here and there. Totally sold on the colour blocking - the orange and pink combo is particularly stunning. Actually I love most of these looks, except the Groucho Marx eyebrows - will give that one a miss, lol...
