We steal anti-ageing make-up tips from Julianne Moore
You know Julianne Moore, right? The super-stunning redhead that starred with Emma Stone in the film Crazy, Stupid, Love? Or were you too distracted by Ryan Gosling’s rock hard abs to notice her? Don’t worry, we couldn’t help but drool either…
Anywho… moving on. Julianne Moore is a beautiful Hollywood actress, and she’s been on this planet for a wonderful 51 years. Despite her age, she refuses to chop off her gorgeous flowing, long shiny strands (note: this is a good thing in her case), and she’s not afraid to play up her features with colourful make-up. Basically, we adore her.
But recently she got it wrong. Really wrong. And because colourful make-up is hard to master at any age, I feel it’s my beauty duty to point out where she went wrong, and how to make bright make-up work past age 50…
ANTI-AGEING MAKE-UP LESSONS TO LEARN FROM JULIANNE MOORE
#1: ORANGE EYE SHADOW IS A NO-NO.
As you age, it’s smart to keep your eye make-up as simple and natural as possible. Sure, a sweep of lightly coloured shadow over the eyelid is fine, but heavy, defined lines and dark eye shadows are not. Softness truly is the key. Peach, orange and pink hues should also be avoided. They have a nasty knack of making the wearer look a little sick, and they also enhance any redness in the eyes and skin. Not good.
#2: YOU CAN WEAR BRIGHT LIP COLOURS
Yes, you can! But the only exception to this rule is this: steer clear of dark colours. Please. Deep lipstick hues will only make your lips look smaller and thinner, which will instantly add years to your age. Bright pops of pink, red and coral with a shiny finish will not only make your lips appear full and luscious, but give your face a beautiful glow, too.
#3: USE MASCARA TO ENHANCE YOUR EYES, AND NOTHING ELSE
See how fresh Julianne looks on the left? It’s because she’s left her eye lids bare, and used loads of mascara to define her beautiful green peepers. This makes her eyes pop, without the need for bold eye shadow hues that only end up sinking into fine lines anyway… Tip: brown mascara is even softer on more mature eyes, so if you’re over 50, ditch your somewhat-harsh black wand for a chocolate hue instead.
#4: CRÈME BLUSHES WILL MAKE YOUR SKIN LOOK SERIOUSLY YOUNG
When a woman reaches the age of 40, she should ditch all her powder-based make-up products (read: foundation, eye shadow and blush) and use cream-based products instead. Why? They won’t sink into fine lines, and they give dry, ageing skin a much need glow. Julianne’s use of pink crème blush on the left gives her cheeks a healthy, radiant finish, while the peachy powder blush seen in the right image does not. Lesson learnt.

Which colourful make-up look do you think suits Julianne Moore, erm, more? Do you have any make-up tips for those over the age of 50?

I think a lot depends on your colouring but I agree that cream blush and foundation look far better on mature skin, and lighter brighter lips are the go. As for eyeshadow & mascara, whoops! - I'm 56 and I wear just about anything, except for reddish shades on the outside of my eyes, which make me either look like I have an infection or walked into a door knob. Matte bronzer is best as well, although I can still get away with a dab of delicate shimmer on my cheekbones (totally avoid anything sparkly). And defining brows requires a new technique - you MUST define them, but with a lighter shade to avoid looking strange.

I like the first picture with the brighter lipstick, the fresh colours takes ten years off her age and it highlights her eyes and porceline skin. This look makes her look brighter and fresher. Whereas the other picture looks as if she is wearing a matte like lipstick which looks as if the colour is seeping into her lip lines and the look to me adds age onto her face. She has a beautiful colouring, which the first picture really compliments that colouring.

I have to agree with some of this and while some of the colours don't suit Julianne Moore, I still think she looks absolutely gorgeous in the first photo. I think we can cut her a little slack, as she seldom gets it wrong and always looks amazing! Her hair is her main feature and I think she would look a little weird if she cut it off. I still think she looks fabulous in both shots, just needs to rethink number 2 in the shade department. Good on her for still looking like a real woman even at 51. :)
And Kat I had no idea of your age and I must say from photo's I have seen I would have put you at 45! Please don't stop with your EOTD as we love these and the bright colours you use are definitely right for you and definitely give us slightly younger ladies a run for our money. Keep up the fabulous looks and just know that you can be glamorous at any age. :)

She does look much better in the first photo. I believe that there are some eye colours that should be avoided at any age, reds and oranges. It might just be me but these colours make me look sick, tired and bruised.

I can't see the difference in the blush, but I agree softer eyeshadow colours are the key to ANY wearer unless you are going to the mardi gra :P

Wow! She's 51? She's completely gorgeous. I love her lips in the first photo and her matte skin texture in the second photo.
My best tip for someone over 50: Suit yourself as you know yourself best. What works for someone at 50 may not work for someone else at 50. We are all so incredibly unique - on the inside, outside and with our personality to carry certain looks off. The same principle goes for any age I think. i.e. What works for someone at 20 may not work for another at the same age of 20.
If I looked anywhere near as good as that at 51 I'd be stoked - either photo will do!

i think less is better when it comes to make up when your 'older'; stick to a neutral palette and with lipsticks never go to bright.

Julianne is so gorgeous. I found this blog really pertinent to me too being a fair skinned redhead and over 40 and I find that I can't wear too much eyeshadow anymore either. Thanks, great tips.

I think she looks stunning in the first photo! But I do agree that the lipstick choice and blusher shade in the second photo aren't doing her any favours.
I do think it comes down to colouring, we aren't all the same skin type and skin colour so we should just do what suits us best, regardless of age. :)

I agree that she looks much better in the first photo - but having said that, my Mum's over 50 and she still wears eyeshadow etc. & it looks awesome on her (she even wears sparkly eyeshadow sometimes). I think it's all about how you choose your colours. As mentioned in the article, orange, red & pink can tend to make most people look ill. BTW: my Mum does NOT wear powder blush!
