As formulas have become more sophisticated, botanic and mineral make-up has not only become better for your skin, it's blossomed beyond earthy colours to cover a glamorously glossy spectrum. Mother Nature just got sexy…
"l use mineral make-up every day, on everyone. As a make-up artist, it is so important to look after your client's skin – one bad reaction can be a disaster, so l need to be able to trust the safety of a product and know it will look great," says make-up artist Victoria Baron. "Natural pigments are fresh, vibrant and now in popular, sexy colours."
Five fabulous natural foundations
ELES Mineral Makeup Mineral Sheer Tint SPF20, $58.50; ID BareMinerals Foundation SPF15, $70; Living Nature Illuminating Tint, $36.95; Inika Mineral Foundation, $54.95; Minerelle Foundation Powder, $77
Kicking chemicals
It's said that, during a year, we can ingest up to 2kg of cosmetic chemicals through our skin. Why's that so alarming? In a recent segment on the Today programme, health editor Dr Ric Gordon cited research that has "shown association" between chemicals, including parabens, and cancer. While no direct,
causal link between cosmetics and cancer has been established, such studies have led to industry-wide debate and the natural biz has boomed as skin-savvy women scrutinise the contents of their beauty bags.

The amount of chemicals we ingest via skincare, cosmetics and bodycare is terrifying, and long-term the effects have to be detrimental! I'm so happy that as consumers we are being saturated with an ever increasing choice of organic, natural and mineral based products. The tide will finally have turned when all beauty products must comply with strict health and safety standards and there are no longer totally unnecessary toxins and dangers lurking within our bathroom vanities and beauty cases...

as glamourcat stated it's a little scary to think about the nasties that we are ingesting through our system and part of that is through the cosmetics, skincare and hair products we apply. I've tried a couple of mineral based products and would like to try more. There is such a fantastic range of natural products on the market these days that it is hard not to choose the natural kind. The Nvey eye palette looks gorgeous with those beautiful colours. I'd also like to try Pur Minerals products at some stage and constantly watch their segment when they are on TVSN.

i guess its cause im young and foolish but i never really thought about natural cosmetics. how ever i do sometimes buy th enatural face masks and body washes as a treat for my down in the dumps adys. but i follow fads with my makeup and often buy what i see in mags. so now after reading that i feel heaps guilty and i think i may go to the health shop and get some of that mineral powder i saw.

Once upon a time natural or organic cosmetics meant daggy earthy colours in awful textures and poor wear and coverage, but now we are spoiled for choice as Vani-T Krush Minerals Crystal Colours, Jane Iredale 24K Gold Mine Loose Powders and Bare Escentuals Mineral Glimmers, just to name a few, come in a myriad of amazing and glamourous colours. The uses for these little pots of wonder are only limited by your imagination! :)

I recently tried my friends Jane Iredale mineral compact and wow, I loved it. I thought the powder would highlight my dry skin - but it made it glow, and I couldn't believe the coverage! I have very noticeable broken capillaries on my cheeks and you could hardly see them. I have been converting my skin care slowly to more natural, nasty free ranges - and my skin has never looked better and I no longer get irritated.

I'd never really considered the absorbtion of chemicals into the skin, however, if I don't wear makeup more than once a week I wonder whether it's not so bad for me compared to, say, someone who wears it everyday?

I've not really given much thought to natural make-up before, simply because natural make-up seemed to only create a natural look. Which is beautiful, but I need my kit to go glam and sexy too! Also good to hear from a professional that these natural colours can stack up against conventional make-up. Feeling inspired now...

Oh, and Redlox - I think that how often you use make-up is absolutely an important point. The more you wear, the bigger quantities your skin absorbs. And when you add that with all the pollution and stuff we can't avoid all day, that must be alot for everyday make-uppers like me! that's why this article has made me rethink my kit!!

I read once that on average Australian women consume (ie; eat) the equivalent of a tub of margarine in lipstick per year. i hope it's not the value pack size they mean. lol

This is a great list. It's great to know there's an increasing range of products to choose from, that don't contain those deadly carcinogens.

Wow! I realised that we must be absorbing some chemicals from makeup but 2kg a year!!!! I am almost out of my regular foundation and I think it's time to go mineral!

Don't forget, it's not just stuff we put on our faces that we absorb! It's the haircare, skincare, body lotions, body butters, fake tans, sunscreens, bath soaks and shower gels... So don't think going sans foundation is going to save you if you liberally slather yourself in body butter, etc. The secret is to find the best brands that are natural, organic or mineral... ;) luckily there are more and more of these ethical companies popping up giving us safer options...

i saw an Inika demo. and was sitting back thinking what a load of bollocks, BUT the model had a really red face and the inika powder foundation covered this without concealer or an old lady powdery look. Very inpressive, must try

Princess75 I think it's a tub of lippy a life time - I don't think I even get through 1 lipstick a year! I heard that somewhere too. And no wonder cancer is so widespread in this day and age, makes you wonder...

Lately I have been giving mineral makeup some thought. I just wonder if it really is as easy to apply as it seems. Its amazin how much chemical we ingest. But what about how much lipstick we digest....it makes me sick to think about it..

Mineral makeup is the way to go, the formulas are so advanced now the foundation coverage is equivalent to a good quality liquid product. I did my makeup one day with only ID Bare Escentuals products (borrowed from a friend who is a beauty therapist), my friends were amazed how good it looked. Plus, it has a sun protection factor, as the minerals reflect sunlight!
